this is one of my favourite marvin gaye tracks... it sort of has a curtis mayfield flavor. i also love the instrumental stuff he did with herbie hancock, like song #3. | |

Sure did and he and Marvin did two other tracks together ("Try It You'll Like It" and "You're That Special One").
Of the three tracks, this one takes the case just for those great Marvin BACKGROUND VOCALS! That dude was a genius when it came to that and he made it sound doo-wop. It just brought that song flavor, something G.C. Cameron's later version tried duplicating (but failed) and something Willie himself missed the mark totally (though I love his version of "Try It You'll Like It" that he put on Mark of the Beast). | |

'try it you'll like it' and 'special one' are great tracks... i happen to be partial to a lot of the motown non-album cuts though. the ones that gordy, etc. may not have thought were made to be singles. i think marvin and STEVIE went in the right direction for focusing on how albums are created, and not how you can pull a single out of it. i don't really like a lot of the single edits from those albums, because some beautiful parts get cut out. | |

They're probably the only ones. Most of the other Motown acts of the period were still part of the old assembly line approach. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. word UP! a lot of the 'black' radio stations in detroit did a motown boycott when gordy moved to california, except for marvin and STEVIE. | |

Marvin was in Cali anyways by then and Stevie was in New York recording his groundbreaking albums. They were in their zone. The other Motown acts were stuck (Martha Reeves, The Supremes, The Four Tops, The Miracles, etc.). | |
