The White Stripes Call It Quits [img:$uid]http://i56.tinypic.com/14wru45.jpg[/img:$uid]
February 2, 2011
The White Stripes have formally announced on their web site that they have broken up.
"The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health,” the two said in their statement. "It’s for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve what is beautiful and special about the band and have it stay that way.”
Jack White's record label, Third Man Records, will continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings from the band in their Vault subscription record club, as well as through regular channels.
“The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore," Meg and Jack said in their statement. "The White Stripes belong to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”
The two haven't released an album in almost four years, as Jack White has focused on his other bands, the Dead Weather and the Raconteurs, and his Third Man label. He also recently produced the new Wanda Jackson album.

This is both / AND /
they kinda saved rock during the early-00s but that's all, that was their mission, their albums after Elephant left me cold, 7 out of 10 at best
I think that the WS are one of those bands which are NOT supposed to last for 20 years, but for 4-6 years of pure/flawless brilliance...
sad, anyway...

sometimes the best thing a band can do is stop making new music.

oh and for Jack. I never gave him or the band much thought. Until I saw "It Might Get Loud" (or whatever it is called). With Jimmy Page and the Edge. I wanted to see it and I saw that Jack White was on it too. And was was all "Please jack should not be allowed to say Jimmy Page much less be in a guitar documentary with him!"
Then I saw it, and the kid has chops. So check out the dvd. (and watch the extras too!) "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

I liked their later albums more.
I'm thankful for having seen them live a few times in both big and small venues when I had the chance. They had great style.

Instinct is telling me that the reason is that they've worked on a new album or 2 and feel the material is lackluster so they want to break up in order to preserve their reputation in the future and not diminish their back catalogue with the new release which they feel is not up to par... seems quite logical i can think of a lot of artists and bands who should have gone down that route lol

That's what I thought. Besides Jack has been working hard at his other projects. I think it'll be kinda silly to think if there's any new, fresh material from the White Stripes especially if their heart's not in it anymore. [Edited 2/2/11 12:06pm]

I still think that "Elephant" is one of the greatest rock albums I've ever heard. She has robes and she has monkeys, lazy diamond studded flunkies....

This is fine with me as long as Jack White goes solo. I seriously wish he would make an album. He is so talented.

They saved rock last decade but they had some fantastic albums, Elephant being my favorite at least this way they don't become stale or run out of ideas.' Plus we got Jack's solo band's Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Sorry to hear that. They were probably my favorite band of the last decade. Elephant is such an amazing record, and Jack White is a genius.
There have been reports and interviews that Meg has a horrific case of stage fright. Maybe the thought of going out on tour again was just too much for her. She's extremely shy and rarely speaks in public.
That "sex tape" probably didn't help things either.
Either way, I'm still a huge Jack White fan. I'll continue to my ear out for anything he does. Be it with the Raconteurs, The Dead Weather, or as a Producer.
Maybe he'll finally put out a Solo Record. JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

I'm a huge fan, but...eh
I prefer hearing Jack with the Raconteurs, honestly. I like bass, I like good production, I like overdubs, I like other instruments, I like technique from drummers...
I liked what they did, but the self-imposed limits that initially freed them to do whatever seemed to become limiting after a time. My Legacy

No offense but to me they were a band that fell under that "Best band ever" title handed out every other week by Spin and ROlling Stone and Q Magazine, could never really get into their stuff, respect his work, buti dont think the title was deserved after one album. I sort of agree with that sentiment about the magazines, but were they really saying it after one album? My Legacy

Right, they didn't make any impact really until their third album.

of course being brother and sister and very young they can (and I predict Will) make more music at some point.

Yeah bud, i know i have talked to you on the forums a few times and you have great taste
I think you would dig them once you get more grooved to the album as a whole and not just the singles.
Cause honestly they never had like any... HUGE singles except maybe

Are they really brother and sister then? i remember the rumour about them being ex-husband and wife, there was supposed to be a marriage certificate as well... People say 'if you haven't got anything nice to say then don't say anything at all' but i say 'IF YOU HAVEN'T GOT ANYTHING TO SAY THEN DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL!'
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
yes, they are not brother & sister, in fact I have wondered if that is the real reason for breaking up. It's difficult to move past those feelings [Edited 2/2/11 18:11pm] My Legacy
