The Sound

I fear this will be one of those threads that sinks without a trace. lol

Over the past few weeks, I've totally fallen for the band The Sound, thanks to finding about them through the 80s poll. biggrin Post-punk is one of my favorite genres, so I'm a very easy sell with that kind of music, but there is something about The Sound that stands out.

Take a song like "Winning", for example. It sets that wonderful post-punk mood with the prominent bass line and tense atmosphere. A lot of bands could get away with this type of song and make it work as a sombre exercise, but two things distinguish it. First, the lyrics are about empowerment. That's right - a post-punk song about climbing from the depths of despair rather than wallowing in it. eek Add to that Adrian Borland's emotive, almost soulful vocals, and you've got a song that is far from standard. The guitar playing in the last minute seals the deal. This is a stone-cold classic!

Another song of theirs that I am really loving is "Missiles". Like "Winning", it sets a classic post-punk mood, with some icy synthesizers making it sound all very eerie. Again, the band could have gotten away with making the song an exercise in chilling atmosphere, but then the chorus comes in. A paranoid freakout of the highest order like this calls for some empassioned vocals, and Adrian Borland provides them to the hilt as the music boils over into quite the guttural tempest!

So far, I've only ventured through their first 2 albums, but what a precious find they are - my favorite so far from all of these decade polls.

Terrific band, sadly overlooked. "Missiles" is one of my favorites too. "From the Lion's Mouth" is a great record.

"I Can't Escape Myself" is another great track.

All of their albums are well worth checking out.

Sadly singer/songwriter Adrian Borland committed suicide in 1999.

I'll have to check out their other stuff! I've discovered that it's very difficult to find their albums on CD as there was a massive impasse over royalties. Apparently it has been resolved, and new reissues may thankfully be on the way.

i had copies of all of their CDs, but I ended up selling them on ebay. "From the Lion's Mouth" got me $74.00!!! It was hard to sell them, but ultimately I decided that the $$ was too much to pass up, and I wanted to sell them before they were reissued again.

I did rip them all in high quality mp3 format before I sold them, of course smile

I'm bumping this because I've taken an interest in punk, new wave and post-punk in the last little while so I'll listen. Thanks, Moonbeam. smile

The song Total Recall is a masterpiece, in a normal world it would have been a monster hit n the same level that Everry Breath You Take.

The death of Adrian Borland is so sad sad

Love the Sound, Adrian Borland was a (troubled) genius. From the Lion's mouth is one hell of an album, all tracks are soooooo good. They're the link between The Cure, Joy Division and U2.

I got into them a year or 2 back, managed to find all lp's and cd's (which were very expensive).

Sense of purpose

Winning

excellent song writing

I used to own the From The Lion's Mouth album on vinyl. The songs "Sense Of Purpose" and "Contact The Fact" got lots of play in goth clubs here (both songs finished in my top 200 80s poll ballot I believe). I never heard any of the other albums though.

Not the most handsome looking frontmen. lol
