I remember this award show really well. It was sort of a turning point in the way at least I myself view popular music history. You had all these big names from the past decades giving introduction speeches and handing out the awards, but at the same time many of the performers and winners were of the new generation of manufactured pop (or "numetal", "modern hiphop" etc. w/e). It was hard to tell whether anyone there really bought it or not. Chris Rock laid out the disparity in front of everyone's faces with that stuff.
I don't know why he backed out and said "I like Kid Rock" though. I seriously doubt he liked him.

My opinion of Dave Chappelle totally changed when I saw him with Maya Angelou on IFC's Iconoclasts. I don't think dude is crazy or a rebel - I think he's enlightened. It takes guts to have what he had, see the truth about how he got it (being owned) and give it all back.
I used to like Chris Rock more, and maybe he's still funnier. I guess that's a matter of taste when you get right down to it. But these days I think Dave is a more cerebral performer, whereas Chris Rock is still doing static written pieces with only a small amount of room for improve. In fact, as far as stand up goes, I think he just writes and performs with his HBO specials in mind these days. I dig what Dave does more, even if it doesn't get the same amount of laughs per minute.

Dude, now you have me remembering watching that and you know something? You're right, he does seem very enlightened. I was actually taken back by him on that show. He got my respect from that. I had totally forgot about it until you mentioned it though. How dumb of me.

Now when he said that, I was like "Chris, you know you don't listen to no damn Kid Rock!"

Another comic I like is Cory Holcomb, sort of like a black Andrew Dice Clay. I can't see him crossing over into mainstream though. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Thing is Chris was one of the best because as he said "he listened to all comics, not just black" thats what he says he tries to instill in young black comics, you have to see it all, you can only grow that way. So when Chris blew through he ripped everything from black to white to male to female, he, like he said is like a Rapper, like NWA, he comes out and HITS YA in the face, where as Eddie M, is like the RB cat. But Chris is from a mixed bag, i mean i remember his inside the actors studio and he spoke of who he watched or listened to, and it was everyone from Richard Pryor to Dice to Kinison to Cosby to Murphy to George Carlin and watched Johnny Carson growing up and listened to old Steve ALLen stuff, i mean, name one black comic that you have heard mention Steve Allen as an influence?? I could've sworn Cos said he was influenced by Steve Allen.

Chris became a stand up when there wasn't any black clubs, and no black outlets for black stand ups at that time as this was before Def Comedy Jam, Comic View hell even before Robert Towsends Partners in Crime and In Living Color. The Comedy Act Theater in Cali hadn't yet opened, so back then you had be be funny to a white audience first and most importantly cause you wanted to play at the Comedy Store, Laugh Factory and the Improv or for Chris a New York comic, The Comic Strip, Carolines, ect.
And for Steve Allen, the older Wayans brothers were influenced by a lot. Keenen has mention Bobe Hope, Red Skelton, Rowan and Martin, and many others. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Keenan definitely was influence by Rowan and Martin. He also was influenced by the Smothers Brothers, too. Remember that In Loving Color skit? JERKIN' EVERYTHING IN SIGHT!!!!!

Yes, he did repeat several jokes from "Jesus Is Black, So Is Cleopatra" in "It's The End Of The World," LOL. However, the new parts are superb, especially the extra segments that's on its DVD's special features. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. If you haven't: Beware. Aside from his performance, there's a lot of random, ludicrously unnecessary nudity during the show (topless women). It was filmed in a strip joint. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee

Wow, I want to check this out. I hope they put it on DVD. I didn't know Tommy was good stand up. I thought he was best situation comedy like the skits in In Living Color. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack
