About 95% of the artists listed in here don't have an ounce of soul. confused

I think some folks are getting confused about what "Blue-eyed soul" is. Now Jonny Lang definitely fits that category, no question, as well as Michael McDonald. Not everyone listed here has that "particular" sound. The late Teena Marie was the Queen of Blue-Eyed Soul, after Janis Joplin, as far as I'm concerned.

[Edited 1/20/11 9:16am]

Exactly! lol Most of the artists listed don't qualify as soul singers. But I agree with a few such as Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse and Dusty Springfield.

Has anybody heard of Mayer Hawthorne? This guy came out with a superb album entitled, A Strange Arrangement two years ago and I am always floored by his talent. Oh, he's indie too!

Mayer is a nice vocalist. I love his album

Paul Weller deserves an honourable mention, too, not least for his Style Council work. I'm quite fond of his cover of Sister Sledge's Thinking of You at the moment, which fits the bill here nicely! cool

You beat me to it lol

.... I would also add Beck, if only for his vocals on "Debra"

That song and all his other 'Prince-isms' on that album always crack me up! In a good way, though. biggrin

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Aside from my girl Teena, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the late Eva Cassidy. Her version of "Autumn Leaves" is outstanding!

Don't you have to have blue eyes first? Some of these folk listed have brown eyes. Jus sayin'. Maybe it's white soul. Euro Soul. Caucasoul. Somethin' like dat.

Or maybe it's just soul period.

To be honest, I'm sick of the different genre boxes for "soul music". You either have soul in your music or you don't. Color shouldn't matter but it does for...some people. confused

Yeah, and shouldn't you have to be from the country to make country music? Last time I checked Nashville is a city. lol To make "funk" music, you should avoid taking a bath and "salsa" is something you dip chips in. Also, since there is "easy listening", what is "difficult listening"? And is "psychobilly" made by loco hillbillies? razz

yeahthat That genre crap started decades ago...and really took root in the late 70s-80s. I totally agree that you "either have soul in your music or you don't!" Short and accurate statement about what is going on with music now. I just might put that as my signature statement! wink

This.

But most of these artists have no soul. You can listen to certain artist and FEEL them - their pain or passion. How in the blue hell is someone like Michael McDonald or Christina Aguilera considered a "blue-eyed" soul artist?

lol
