Chaka or Minnie Riperton? I love both ladies, but I have to go with Chaka. Minnie can be a bit esoteric for me at times and since my tastes are more commercial and also, I know more of her catalog, I have to go with Chaka. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I like more Chaka songs than Minnie songs, so Chaka for me.

Minnie's was far more interesting to this Chaka fan. The CK version was really quite expected. Love both of these apples. I also love oranges.

If we are comparing versions, Chaka all the way. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Minnie is one of the sweetest souls we ever got to enjoy musically (and that 5 1/2 octave voice was RAPTURE...ferreal).
But Chaka? that's that the Alpha AND the Omega right there. It IS kinda apples & oranges, honestly, but if I had to choose...its Ms. Khan 50:1. She a living gift from God vocally.
Maybe if Minnie had lived longer this would be a tighter race...but Chaka's vocal power, material & soul just totally obliterates her contemporaries (and.....hell.......to this day her "would be succesors" as well.
Minnie was purer of spirit, but Chaka EMBODIES the spirit. I think that's the diff.
Full disclosure though....I love both laidies dearly & am so thankful they were able to share their gifts with me in my life.
I don't wanna choose...I need both these ladies in my musical lexicon. Anyhing less & I'd weep openly. Funk Is It's Own Reward

I can't choose, sorry.
Yes, Riperton and Khan knew each other; Rufus at one point worked with Riperton at Chess Records.

i'm AIN'T choosin'!!! nope won't do it. minnie's life was unexpectedly short and her catalogue didn't get a chance to develop. kinda unfair pairing IMO
