Blue-eyed soul, who has it? The expression 'Blue-eyed' soul has been around for many years. It is used to brand Caucasian acts that come across with a soulful type delivery, and their acceptance in the African-American community, whether on radio, BET or in personal recorded music collections.
Some acts over the years that have been declared "soulful"
Righteous Brothers Dusty Springfield Lydia Pense Teena Marie Hall & Oates David Bowie Simply Red Steve Winwood Beth Hart Christina Aguilera Justin Timberlake Dan Hartman Edgar Winter Stevie Ray Vaughn Lulu Eric Burdon Rod Stewart Paul Young Average Wite band Wild Cherry George Michael Boy George Robin Thicke Jon B. The Young Rascals Michael McDonald The BeeGees

Great list, BTW.
There's a new guy out, but I cannot remember his name. His videos have been posted here. One of them is set in Southern California, with the camera following him as he walks down the streets of Venice, meeting interesting people.
He's got a great, Motown sound.

Paul Weller deserves an honourable mention, too, not least for his Style Council work. I'm quite fond of his cover of Sister Sledge's Thinking of You at the moment, which fits the bill here nicely! Without a doubt! "Jonny Lang", no question.

How could I forget Mr. Marriott?!
Reg King and Art Wood (Ronnie bro) I discovered from mod forums. I was really dumbstruck at how good Reg was, but I like Art alot too. I guess certain (mod) bands didn't get much play in the USA back then, but thank good ness for YouTube. We can "discover" them now!
A few more UKers for the list: John Mayall Graham Bond Long John Baldry

About 95% of the artists listed in here don't have an ounce of soul.

Has anybody heard of Mayer Hawthorne? This guy came out with a superb album entitled, A Strange Arrangement two years ago and I am always floored by his talent. Oh, he's indie too!
How could you all forget this one though, who left the scene right after his debut? Check me out and add me on:

I think some folks are getting confused about what "Blue-eyed soul" is. Now Jonny Lang definitely fits that category, no question, as well as Michael McDonald. Not everyone listed here has that "particular" sound. The late Teena Marie was the Queen of Blue-Eyed Soul, after Janis Joplin, as far as I'm concerned. [Edited 1/20/11 9:16am]

Rare Earth, Joe Cocker, Janis Joplin, Michael McDonald, KC & The Sunshine Band, but I don't know about the rest. Frankie Valli and the Bee Gees I would not consider "Blue-Eyed Soul Singers", but they both had similar sounds, which were very captivating and that sound crossed-over with Black audiences, but I can't label them as "soul singers" like the sound of Janis Joplin, Michael McDonald and Joe Cocker have. She could be the next "Teena Marie" for sure.

You guys forgot someone: Bonnie Bramlett! She has a HUGE soulful voice and was the only white Ikette back in the day (they painted her in blackface so the chitlin circuit audiences wouldn't know). She can SANG!
Try to find her version of A Change Is Gonna Come or any of her 70s material. "Keep in mind that I'm an artist...and I'm sensitive about my shit."--E. Badu
