With Rock The Boat one could see how much potential Aaliyah really had-such a shame she did not live to realize that potential

Aww Happy Birthday to Aaliyah
My favorites are "Are You That Somebody", "4 Page Letter", "One In A Million", "I Don't Wanna Be" and "At Your Best" (her rendition is just beautiful).
It's so sad how her life was cut short, but she definitely made her mark and will always be missed.

the even sadder thing and i loved aaliyah and her image, but the saddest part, is the way the genre and music has drastically changed since her death, not because of, just in the way it has gone, you all do realize that she would have been written off already because of her age and everything, i do think she would have found solace in other fields of entertainment though, modeling, acting etc.. I've spoken to someone about this same subject awhile back they think it's because we lost her .....Crappy Oversexed RnB and the Rise of the Britney and her like grew because she was the missing link between Janet and what we have today....but who knows? not even Britney, she was on the scene while aaliyah was still alive, but there is this HUGE thing in music now called Age-ism, and i know Aaliyah would have been faced with it too, we have to rememeber that Aaliyah was big but not huge, and sales were dropping with the third album, at the time of her death, so i really think that it was going to be an issue. Today also would have been my grandma's bday and she died a year after Aaliyah. I always remember this day. "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

I don't think the AGE-ism played a big part it would have been the OTHER-ism ..... Britney still around why would Aaliyah not be if not for her sad passing (R.I.P.) Well i'd buy that if people like Jessica Simpson and Xtina could still sell numbers like they did, but they are yesterdays news and tabloid fodder at this point. Aaliyahs genre as with the HipHop market is not nearly as loyal as the pop/rock market, however age is still a factor, no matter your race especially in america, overseas you can still have a band like depeche mode in the top 10 where as in america, the top 10 is set uup for 9 year olds. She was an awesome singer. Out of her, monica and brandy, I listened to Brandy the most, but Aaliyah was the most exciting to watch cause of her routines and timbaland beats and gorgeous looks overall. She definitely showed promise, but I also remember her album sales going down just before her death and then it went back to the top spot, as someone said.
I don't know if there would have been ageism or sexism towards her not right now, she's the same age as Usher and always looked a little younger than she was. I'm sure she would have done fine or been Beyonce's competition without trying to mirror her the way Rihanna was accused of doing so in the past.

I don't think there would be ANY competition between Beyonce and Aaliyah. They are two different kinds of artists. Aaliyah had real endeavors to branch out into different types of music that did not play the mold her label wanted to put her in. Beyonce has never done that. She has always been riding firmly on top of the trends, like a black Madonna. Aaliyah made it very clear she had no intentions of doing that sort of thing.
We can only take her at her word, unfortunately. Who knows, though. Britney Spears has always said she wanted to work with all these crazy people and do acoustic or blues albums, etc but she's never been able to due to her label.
