Yea, I agree. I think it depends on the tracks. I know Rodney and JD mixed their own songs. On other songs there were other mixers who also had mixing assistants.

With U is the biggest offender on the whole set

That's on 20 Y.O., not Discipline doh! lol

But I agree that With U is offensive. Especially, compared to her classic ballads.

It's like they recorded it......then played the tape into a ghetto blaster neutral

I like it cause it reminds me of music from the 90's produced by R.Kelly, like for Changing Faces and Sparkle. And I love the piano hook and melody in it and love randomly singing it.

My favourite line is "how do I erase my days shaded in blue, all my love's for you"

Hell no... "I wuvved you, you wuvved me" is the best line from the whole damn album! Possibly of her entire career.

it's a good song, but it had the potential to be a great ballad, but thanks to cheap production, something was very off

Discipline is a work of art compared to 20 Y.O. But she hasn't released a great, or even good album since TVR.

There's definitely some noisy compression on 20 Y.O., I thought the worst was the duet with Nelly, "Call On Me". The drum machine highhats and kicks scrape away at the melodic parts.

^ I would love to hear your Discipline review, I like what you said about the other albums.

My order is

All For You

Discipline

Damita Jo

20 YO

and yes I agree those 3 20 YO tracks you named are the hottest ones: Enjoy, Take Care and Get It Out Me

Thanx! I think Discipline got a lot of unwarranted flack for being a "bad" album (probably because of the video for Feedback, which a lot of people didn't get), but it was actually a little ahead of its time. Nowadays, every pop/R&B act from Rihanna to Usher is doing the Euro-dance, synth-pop thing, and, while Janet didn't necessarily start that trend, when Discipline came out there wasn't much synth-pop on the US pop music scene. I firmly believe that if Rock With U were released today, it would flourish amongst songs like Only Girl In The World, DJ's Got Us Fallin In Love, etc. I also love the album artwork and the whole android "Kyoko" thing they did with the interludes on that album.

I don't think it's that bad like people make it seem , some tracks are underrated imo.

It's either that or 20 YO. Both were trash.

Evey album after The Velvet Rope were all Janet's worst albums thus far.

"Enjoy" is my favorite but I didn't find nothing wrong with "With U". I loved the ending when they took the drums off though they were getting on my nerves but it's not a bad song. Now "This Body (Of Mine)" on the other hand... disbelief One of the lowest moments of Janet's career...lol

I think it was a good attempt for being her first major album without the studio wizardry of Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.............I want them back together. But it looks like its not going to happen...

Jermaine Dupri's production made the album hard to listen to.......it's like he gave her all his leftover tracks.

yes I agree with you completely! I was watching the Rock With U video after so long the other day and thought Kesha and Katy Perry have nothing on her, though I imagined a mashup of the two, and the image and music reminded me of gaga or rihanna, though Janet did that first. I also loved Kyoko aww smile

Call On Me has grown on me years later and is pretty, but I'm not crazy about it, there are songs with a similar style that came out a year or two before it and are way superior to it.

This Body and Do It To Me, I have a like-hate relationship with

I like a lot of his productions though not every single thing. He has had a lot of success though for 20 years, but a big ego as well.

it's a brilliant pop and r&b set that does Britney-Beyonce's sound better than Britney or Beyonce could ever do their own shit. don't listen to the haters.

It is better than All for You and actually just beats 20 YO but i love both 20yo and Discipline...best cuts are

"Whats Your Name"
"So Much Betta"

"Rollercoaster"

"Luv"

"Rock With U"

"Feedback"

"Can't B Good"
"Discipline"
"Curtains"

I'll leave it alone babe...just be me

Yeah I'm not convinced either.

The All For You singles were much stronger than Damita Jo's but when you wanna talk about an album in its entirety it's the other way around.

Damita Jo > All For You

Yup Damita all the way!

Enjoy and With U are about the only things on on 20 Y.O. that don't induce nosebleeds and migraines in me. maybe because they're not trying to be the cacaphony that passes for r&b circa 2006. i mean, neither of the 2 songs is trying very hard at all at anything, but you can at least sit through them without having an epileptic seizure.

Add "Daybreak" and "Take Care" and I agree completely.

The problem with 20 Y.O. isn't that it doesn't have any good songs. The problem is that when it's bad, it's absolutely abysmal. disbelief

I would LOVE to see her get back in the studio with Jimmy & Terry. They seem 2 bring somethin' out of her that no one else can/could. Two songs I absolutely LOVE and wish were singles (because they would have boosted a low-selling album) are: "My Baby" & "Thinkin' "Bout My Ex" from Damita Jo. Also, the title of that album was just bizarre. But then again, 20 y.o. (as a title) was TOO in my opinion. Who, other than her family would even know her as "Damita Jo?" After "All For You," she got a little weird in her musical direction(s). :-O
