The Tavares version is more soulful and upbeat while The Bee Gees version is a beautiful ballad. Completely different takes on the song, but both versions are equally great imo.
I can't choose. I honestly love them both. "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ
"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always

I love both--like to hear them back to back. "Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." --Plato

Because people love to divide and conquer, I don't listen to them just to see what's better either.

I prefer both! One of the few versions that I can't honestly choose one over the other. "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

Oh I like them both honestly. The Tavares version is kinda like disco meets the O Jays. And The Bee Gees voices are just so distinctive. Prince esta muerto...

I think it's cool that they used two versions of this song in the movie and on the soundtrack It gives us two different ways to enjoy it.

You need to watch THIS scene to understand why my vote goes to The Bee Gees:

That's the scene that always comes to mind when I listen to that song as well. It was a poignant moment in the movie. "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ

Interestingly, the Bee Gees version was never released as a single, but you would have thought it was a single if you were listening to the radio back then Their version got just as much airplay as the singles from the album.
The Tavares version did become a single.

That's like asking you choosing between your kids...not fair!
Seriously, it's about mood...both versions are simply KILLER. It was great of the folks at RSO to keep both versions in the order they did.
