Janelle Monae The Future Of Music

That's a bold statement, but i love this girl she is going to do great thing's in the music scene.

Her album the ArchAndroid is just fantastic Faster, Tightrope, Cold War, Mushrooms & Roses have the soulfulness of old school R&B, the rock of Prince, the weird and essentricness of Bjork & Grace Jones. & of course the sound of Outkast is presented to, the girl when i saw her perform at Stevie Wonder's concert i was amazed.

She did some James Brown move's, sang beautifully even did an operatic type thing eek, and she has the look of old school Little Richard with her hair razz

Basically i love this chick, i hope she doesn't fall off i have faith in her, she is the next big thing in music i can't wait for her next albums=]

Overrated. Dear lord, I remember discovering wonderful new artist and just enjoying them. Now, everyone feels the need to hype them. Why is that?

People here throw the word "overrated" like its chump change, you should get used to it by now.

Nevermind the fact that I RARELY see Janelle on TV/Radio, yet she's "overrated" lol

I love her.

True! She's not underground, but she's not too popular by the masses. Her newest album, The ArchAndroid deserves all the praise and hype it is getting. It isn't like she is setting the charts on fire and I haven't really seen her make a TV or radio appearance since the BET awards. I love her too!

I would not go as far as to say that she is the future of music, but she is a very pleasant breath of fresh air.

Time will tell if the hype surrounding her is justified, but right now i cannot think of many other artists who have perked my interest as much as Janelle Monae has in the last year.

this lady is being treated as the new genius of pop music and that's ridiculous...

that said, I think ArchAndroid is a good album, but certainly not a masterpiece or something that is gonna last for the next 30 years...

Janelle is abreath of fresh air with her 2 releases

Everyone knows Miss Monae for her clean-cut dress attire consisting of a black and white uniform, black tie, and 1950’s hairstyle,

From her black and white uniform to her unique Marliyn Monroe hair-do, Monae is certainly bringing creativity to music and art.

“I call it my uniform. My mother was a janitor and my father collected trash, so I wear a uniform too.”

Her performance look, which Janelle dubs her "uniform," comes from the influence of "the working man and woman." While she calls the main source and genesis of her look "private," she did say part of it is about: "Paying homage to them (those working men and women) and giving them a nod saying I know what they're going through. It's my responsibility-working- when I have my uniform on."

Cha know, for the level of talent she actually displays on her album, i'd say the youngin's here who are desperate for validation are overrating her and overhyping her.

She's good...I enjoy her stage presence & voice. I remember 1st hearing her on Outkast's "Idlewild" Soundtrack on "Call The Law"...Ended up being one of my favorite five tracks from the album...Interestingly enough, I was almost signed to Stankonia Records (which transformed into Purple Ribbon Records when Dre3000 lost interest) back in 2005, but they went with a R&B cat named Scar instead...Janelle & Scar were, @ the time, the two flagship artists of Purple Ribbon in 2006 for the "Got Purp?" Collection that included the Big Boi hit "Kryptonite". Never heard much about Scar after that, but Janelle started making the rounds in Atlanta independently around 2007-08, the time the original lineup of my band, The ExileMusikMob, were active here...

She is a breath of fresh air, talented & I wish her the best. Her & her independent company worked hard (& probably had a good budget), but she definitely enjoyed the benefit of having supporters like Outkast & most recently, P. Diddy & U know who...She's a hell of alot better than most of these fools out here. And she actually deserves more promotion & support, like most of us so-called "different" artists do.

U know, people talk about the hype, but most of the time, that's the only way to get people's attention. People love hype & most of the time, it works to a T. Trust me, I know. In a system where Justin Bieber is "The Artist of The Year" , Lil Wayne is being touted as "The New Jimi Hendrix", Drake, who is Larry Graham's nephew, doesn't have a funky bone in his entire body, but you can't get away from him, etc.

Don't mean 2 be mean, but damn, the list goes on & on...

Big ups to her. Somehow, she made it through the cracks...Persistence, & maybe a little luck. wink Hopefully, it opens up the doors for more artists like her, female & male. Just being honest... cool

Whats the big deal though? shrug

I don't get GaGa's hype(and I've tried) but I certainly can't dictate how they identify with her.

Janelle has promise, I won't say she's a genius YET but if she keeps it up consistently(not on some D'Angelo/Sade/Lauryn leave of absence bullshit) I might have to consider. Hell, it goes to show you how hungry folks are for just a "little" individuality.

And I think the use of the word "overrated" around these parts IS "overrated" and "overhyped" lol

I like the immaculate production, and her smooth delivery, but it's a hugely derivative mish-mash from start to finish. Faster's guitar so reminds me of Fela Kuti's Expensive Shit and it clearly pinches a melody from a Stevie (or it could be a Jacko) song. So much hyperbole surrounding this record, it just doesn't hang together - not in the way the new Kanye does.

20Ten pretty much slayed everything last year.

I posted about this song before...

Its just,,,,,oooh mushy

Can't help but to think how she would sound if she made an EP full of acoustic material, ya know, just to test the waters. Acoustic route is really what seals the deal for me.

Ow well, ik some people wouldn't like her but I do so that what matters to me. And as for me being 20 and young, yes I love nothing but old music, but someone said its the young people overrating her, that has nothing to do with it. Music is good no matter the age new or old if it is good its good. Love:-)

It's a hell of a lot better than The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was, yet it doesn't have a track that really hits me in the gut, the way Ex-Factor did.
