Who do you think was the best "new" rock band circa 2000-2010?

I was trying to think about this recently and it seems that 2000-2010 was a lost decade for rock music. Who were the dominant young rock bands of this decade? Coldplay? The Strokes? Fall Out Boy? Good Charlotte? The Killers? My Chemical Romance? Off the top of my head these are some of the more popular bands of this era but they seem very weak when compared to any other era from the '60s to the '90s. It also seems like there is much less variety, at least in the mainstream. I guess I'm wondering where all the great young rock bands are? Are they out there and I just missed them? Was Lenny right when he said that rock and roll was dead?

What do you think?

A couple of qualifiers:

1) for the purpose of this thread "rock" refers to guitar based music.

2) I'm limiting this to bands that released their first album from 2000-2010 (so bands like the White Stripes, My Morning Jacket and the Drive-By Truckers are disqualified).

I'd say Linkin Park based on their first couple albums, but they fell the fuck off with the last two, so maybe not...

My vote would definitely go to the Strokes. They are really great, by far my favorite "new" band of the last decade... Their new album comes out in march.

Another popular band is kings of Leon...

If we can include heavy rock/metal I would suggest A Perfect Circle. I can't really think of any others, most of the great rock bands that aren't too old started in the 90s. So I'm pretty much all out after one suggestion, which is pretty sad... neutral

It's even more dire when you consider most of the bands named here had their debut/best years in the first half of the decade. Someone mentioned Kings of Leon and they are an exception but the last 5-6 years have been really bad for rock music.

Honestly, no one. No one has risen to the challenge of putting out work consistently, everyone who did one good record or maybe two fell off the map, to me you need to keep doing work to prove yourself, I mean if you are a "new" band and an older band like u2 or pearl Jam does more albums than you by a 3 to 1 margin, whats the point of you. Too many "greatest band in the world" titles handed out to bands with one album and then nothing but talk about how good they are from bloggers and hack writers for Rolling Stone and Spin

Yeah But honestly Radiohead started that crap title, that no deserves till they prove it, i mean so many have had the "greatest band ever" title in the last 15 years or so, Radiohead, the strokes, coldplay, arcade fire, the muse and so many others, its not like these bands are bad or anything but let them breath and do the work for themselves

I can't identify with one single band from the last 10 years.

Call me insane but the best rock songs I heard this decade were all......on the Disney channel. 'Start All Over' by Miley gets my pick for best rock song. It easily rocked harder than any gay Fall Out Boy, Linkin Park, etc etc. Take a listen and tell me how wrong I'm not.

The Strokes perhaps, But Radiohead and The White Stripes were the best "new" rock bands of that 2000-2010 era, despite forming before then.

Yep, that's it

Add Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys, or even Arcade Fire/Coldplay to the mix (if we can consider them as rock acts-I don't-lol) and that's what 00s rock was (is) all about...

I like/d The Strokes, particularly Room On Fire and the Julien Casablancas album. The Killers debut had some good songs, or so I thought at the time; and other than that, I've heard sweet fanny adams to pique my interest on the rrrrrock front.

Most of the ones I'd pick have been mentioned, but anyway:

The Strokes

Franz Ferdinand

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Interpol

The xx

They didn't have a big impact, but I like them:

Wolf Parade

Death from Above 1979

Xiu Xiu

These artists are kind of rock lol :

LCD Soundsystem

!!!

Gorillaz

Clor

Arcade Fire (thankfully the 00s doesn't include the dreadful The Suburbs)

I don't love Interpol but I respect them, their sound is fresh, but they lack hit singles, a major problem

Xiu Xiu? wth is that?

and I think you said that The Suburbs is a grower hmmm is not that bad man....

The only thing that grows for The Suburbs is my disdain for it!

Xiu Xiu is a bit wacky, but brilliant. Check out "Crank Heart".

Franz Ferdinand, Gorrilaz & Queens Of The Stone Age...Audioslave & Velvet Revolver were great, but of course, their previous incarnations were superior. wink I like the White Stripes as well, but as someone pointed out, they were formed before 2000...but they're definitely "21st Century" as far as I'm concerned....

Shucks, I haven't listened to The Hives in about five years! I'll have to dust those discs off and give them a spin.

I was going to include System of a Down, but since they debuted in 1998, they don't count.

I guess I would have to list the following bands, but the 2000's was a bad decade for rock and roll.

Coldplay

The Strokes

Arcade Fire

Franz Ferdinand

The Killers

Jet

Avenged Sevenfold

The Hives

The White Stripes

Evanescence

Interpol

The Bravery

Paramore

Muse

I don't know... I SO welcomed the glam new wave-y rock of the 2000s after the maudlin hippie grunge of the 90s.

Yes, there was some good nu-wavy influenced rock bands in the 2000's, but most of them were overshadowed by proto-grungy groups like Creed and Nickelback or emo groups like Dashboard Confessional, Simple Plan and Good Charlotte.
