Radiohead, R.E.M & Depeche Mode Three of my favorite band's, who are big king's in the alternative scene i chose these 3 cause i rarely see a lot of talk of Radiohead on here, and i know there has to be some fan's there music is amazing. Put aside that there the critical darlings of the past decade or so and all that perception, it's a listen for yourself, the different styles they have done. the sound's, lyrics and everything that accompanies is beautiful. my favorite Radiohead is Kid A, To some they see it as one of the best albums ever made, to others it is noisy, weird.. boring. And stupid so it can be a 2 way street.
R.E.M Where just beast's of the alternative and Michael Stipe is one of my hero's, I have all there albums and at the time it's hard to pick one but if i had to i think Monster is my all time fav.
Depeche Mode has been discussed at length a few time's here, a great example of a band that kept growing throughout the year's getting better and better after every album. Music For The Masses is my fav, And Ultra is a close second.
Any fan's? let's talk in depth about those great band's Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Ok let me get RadioHead out of the way first. I cant say that im a "fan" but i dont dislike them, i respect them for challenging, i just sometimes feel they are a little too "out there" but hey someone has to be. But some great records like "The Bends" "Ok Computer" and "Amnesiac"
Depeche Mode, i have had a on and off love for, sometimes i get deep into them, and sometimes i cant listen to them at all, I like their darker stuff by far i mean songs like "Condemnation" "Home" "Barrel of a Gun" "Its No Good", they def are one of the best bands of the last 25 years!
Now REM, i would have to say one of my Top 10 fave bands of all TIME! Im there for everything they do, every single, cd, ep, box set, dvd, statement they wanna make. They held together despite quite alot, they weathered the storm of blowing up from a college radio band with a loyal following, and that backlash that your old fans give you when you start to sell! REM never never sold out, anyone who thinks they did is nuts, they always push it. I respect Michael Stipe for this statement "My best Album is the one i Just made, thats why i made it" That is what an artist should be saying and how they should be behind their work!
From REM its too tough to list what i love, i tend to shy away from hits, but here are my Top 5 REM albums

Thank you for the response
Radiohead, i personally like there out there worldly vibe they portray and it doesn't seem forced which is why i like it=] Ok Computer is my 2nd fav! there fans can be very mixed some don't like anything past Ok Computer, some don't like anything before Kid A. Some only like Pablo Honey!
YES YES YES YES YES On DM, There dark song's are incredible, Ultra is beautifully dark album, with also some of Martin's best musicianship coming to show as well!, Home is a great song with a powerful video as well as Barrel Of A Gun. Jazz Thieves is in my top 10 DM Song's
My 3rd fav is Songs Of Faith & Devotion
Yes, they have come together through the times, and still make powerful music. Green is my 2nd fav, And Automatic 3rd...
Like Depeche they grew each album, and i actually prefer there later stuff Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

love all three. radiohead first and most. love just about every single song they've recorded, including bsides and one off tracks. which, by the way, all ads up to a huge amount of stuff. it's almost impossible to pick a favorit radiohead album since they're all bloody great. if i'd be pressured into picking one it would probably be "In Rainbows", but that's just today, ask me tomorrow and it might be "Amnesiac"
rem and depeche mode, i've liked and followed since the early 90s. both very good groups, who had some of their best music released in the 90s and kept on releasing strong material in the 00s but somehow just seem a bit disconnected at the moment. still waiting for either of them to come back with an absolutely stellar album.
favorite REM album is and probably always will remain "Monster", total musical cumfest for me, start to finish. top 10 album of all time.
favorite Depeche Mode album is "Songs of Faith and Devotion", nearly perfect album with a lot of superb songs on it. like "monster" and "achtung baby" it has a unique feel that is just entirely of it's own and stretches through all the songs. good stuff.

Totally true on the RadioHead, i forgot to mention Kid A, but yeah they have varied fans that are that way with them. With REM they kind of have that following, some that hate anything done after Green, some that only like from Out of Time onward. And Depeche the darker the better, love Martin's total input, ULTRA is amazing, Songs of Faith also, and of course Violator is a ffreaking monster album!

I'll assign my feelings toward each as a score out of 10.
Radiohead: 7
I've tried to really get into them, and while they have great moments ("Exit Music (For a Film)", "No Surprises", "Climbing Up the Walls", "Pyramid Song"), something holds me back from really, really diving in. I've only heard OK Computer and Kid A in full as well as some other singles, but I feel that there's a limit to how much I could love them. Still, I recognize the importance of their place in music history and do enjoy the albums I have.
R.E.M.: 3
Sorry, this is one of the acclaimed artists that I just don't get. Aside from a few singles ("Stand", "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?", "The One I Love"), I find them to be pretty irritating.
Depeche Mode: 9.5
Love, love, LOVE. I adore synth pop in general, so it's no surprise that they score well with me. Violator is one of the greatest albums I've ever heard - a real benchmark of electronic music. None of the other albums reach those peaks, but they still have many good/great albums. Feel free to join in the Prince Album Poll 2018! Let'a celebrate his legacy by counting down the most beloved Prince albums, as decided by you!

Only pre-Out of Time R.E.M were ever alternative, they're hugely followed mainstream bands and Radiohead and Depeche Mode didn't exactly labour long for recognition.
I've a lot of time for R.E.M, particularly New Adventures In Hi-Fi.
I used to listen to The Bends back in the late nineties, but I find Radiohead's music a true downer.
Depeche Mode are a funny one: I'm nonplussed by how big they became and still are, filling vast stadia across the states and mainland europe with their ploddy dark synthyness. World in My Eyes is a great song though.

I Know some people are very mixed on the band's. But glad you at least see the greatness of Radiohead=]
But i do feel Music for the masses, Ultra & Songs Of Faith & Devotion are actually stronger then Violator. But from the Black Celebration and in nothing but great albums. The sounds of the universe was sos o Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I know i tend to stay away from the hits, alot of people are just into Rem on the hit points like Stand and Losing My Religion, im more into their full albums, and album cuts, to me thats where you find the artistry of any long term artist, for REM cuts like "Find the River" "Let Me IN" "Leave" "Around the Sun" and many others are "hits" not in a chart sense, same goes for depeche. I mean im like this with most long term artists, where im a huge Mellencamp fan have everything, most people always point to "Jack and DIane" "Hurts So good" and "PinK Houses" which are great songs, but dig deep on those albums and you find the artists soul "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Of the three I am really only a fan of Radiohead. Yes, they are out there, and at times they seem like they are trying too hard to be difficult. But at other times it just seems to come naturally to them. Despite their difficult nature, nearly anyone could find a song of theirs that they liked. They are truly a brilliant and unique band, the best of the past 15 years or so (IMO).
I respect the other two bands, and I like some REM songs very much. In the 80's I disliked Depeche Mode, but I have since realized that they actually were pretty forward thinking and have some decent songs. My Legacy

I've listened to every Radiohead album obsessively for days and weeks at a time (I think I listened to In Rainbows - with the bonus tracks - everyday for a good month after it was released). Love that band passionately. So much so that I no longer feel any need to defend or explain them. Either you get it or you don't. And if you don't, well, that makes it easier for me to get tickets when they come to town.
Love Depeche Mode and have regularly listened to their music since the "Some Great Reward" album. But for me (and this has been discussed here at the org recently in another thread) they're a song band, not an album band. I have a folder with all my favorite Depeche Mode mp3s and that's what I listen to. I occasionally add a song or two to it when they release a new album. But I don't think I'll ever go back and listen to the other album tracks again.
Don't get REM. Never have. I had friends who listened to their really early stuff - back when Michael Stipe mumbled everything.

Totally agree, except for the fact that I LOATH both "Stand" and "What's The Frequency, Kenneth?" with a SERIOUS passion.
Regarding the alternative aspect of all these bands. REM was one of a handful of bands that was largely responsible for taking what was simply known as "college radio" and turning it into "alternative". They may be the only one of those band that then took it completely mainstream.
Radiohead may have started there, but I don't think they did so intentionally (or rather, conciously - I'm seriously doubt it was on their minds when they were young men writing songs in Oxsfordshire). And they definitely didn't stay their long. But I don't think they can even be put in one of those boxes as every single album is slightly (or jarringly) different.
Depeche Mode pre-dates alternative (by a lot of years) and have always done their own Depeche Mode thing. They're synth pop, I guess. But synth pop has come and gone in the eyes and ears of the music buying public a couple of times during the span of their career. Really, they're just Depeche Mode. They update their equipment and sounds every few years, but you still INSTANTLY know it's Depeche Mode when you hear it.

I dont think REM really made it commercial i think it was just the phase that music went through where all of a sudden they were in, and then they werent again, I always felt they got lumped into the "college radio" thing because that was the big thing then, just like i never felt Pearl Jam was part of "grunge" they were a rock band, grunge to me was this depressing Soundgarden type think and i didnt get that from Pearl Jam, i think PJ is still that same band they were, but now no one says its grunge. I think any artist is a like it or not, i mean people worship michael stipe and some think hes an ass and dont get him, i personally think he is one of the best writers because as Eddie Vedder said when inducted them into the RRHOF, "you wanted to know WHAT THE FUCK is he saying, so you had to read his lyrics". RadioHead is like U say in or out, i sometimes can deal with them, but they lost me after "Amnesiac" for the most part, i still listen but i find myself not listening more. Depeche i actually like more in the 90's than the 80's one of FEW 80's band they were stronger in the 90's though some will say u2 also. With artists long term u will always have this like it or hate it type response i think. love all 3.
Hard to pick a favorite Radiohead album, but I probably gotta go with OK computer just edging out In Rainbows. But they are the best band in the world in my opinion. The Bends thru In Rainbows - each one is a classic.
i have all their bsides and xtra tracks as well. amazing band.
Depeche Mode... Violator is their absolute peak, but I love alot of their other stuff as well. Music for the Masses is killer.
REM... consistently outstanding. If I had to pick one, i'd go with Document. But one of their hidden masterpieces is "I've Been High" from 'Reveal'. One of my favorite songs.
Also.... "Walk Unafraid" from "Up". One of my personal anthems. * * *

Radiohead- Love em. I will admit I didn't get into them until about 2002 or so. I picked up Kid A at a library out of curiousity. While listening to it I thought it was somekind of a remix album of theirs. It didn't sound like a "proper" album to me. Lol. After realizing it was, I quickly got into them. Now I have all their stuff, Cds/B-sides/Dvds etc, and they are one of my fave bands.
Kid A/Amnesiac and In Rainbows are my faves. Plus many of their B-sides.
Depeche Mode- Like them a lot. Been a fan since Music For the Masses. SynthPop fan from way back.
Ultra and Violater being my faves. Even better in 5.1 surround sound.
REM- Not a fan. I like a few songs here and there and I respect them a lot but their music and sounds have never appealed to me. I dunno. Driver 8 is cool.
2 out of 3 aint bad...lol

Radiohead: I despise their 90s albums, but I acknowledge the greatness of The Bends and OK Computer. Their "I'm a loser-Cynism Rules the Land-I'm Different" kind of rock never appealed to me. But I LOVE-LOVE-LOVE Kid A/Amnesiac/InRainbows. I prefer their (current) experimental/vanguardist-rock era. And Yorke's voice is not as awful as it was in the '90s
R.E.M.: perhaps the best & most famous american alternative-rock band of all time. I do admit that their career after Automatic for the People has been pretty uneven. But their '80s albums are still stone cold classics.
Depeche Mode: best electronic/song-based band of all time, probably. In my Top10 of favorite acts...

Radiohead..the best recent band. They're not afraid to push music into different places. It's exactly what Prince was doing in the eighties. I love almost every single track that they have done. R.E.M. - well, well, well..I like their old albums and singles, but I feel that in their new output they're a little bit too soft. Depeche Mode - apart from Violator and Ultra, I can't get into them. My friend told me to listen to "The Songs Of Faith And Devotion". Though I liked some of it, the rest is too lazy and boring at times. Kill All Hipsters
