To be honest, it's an acquired taste. I don't like it initially but I'd probably like it if I listen to it like four times. lol

I concur but it looks like that will only happen when hell freezes over. Oh how I beg for a TTT reunion...and the funny thing is, it's like he's playing with us because he KNOWS the fans want a TTT reunion. That shit would be so hot.....sigh pout

With that said, the single is like "The Way I See It" sped up 6 times over and 100 more times annoying. shake I hope the whole new album doesn't sound like that awful single. I know the man is the epitome of being different, but hell, that shit sounds like a 1959 remake of some awful reject song. It's fuckin' 2011 Rafael and we are getting fed up with yo ass. hmph!

This song is okay, but I can definitely hear some Prince and Sly influences on it. The retro thing he is working with is just getting annoying and overbearing. This song is a little different coming from him and I hope this new album is good, if not better than the last one.

Well he's been doing this retro thing since he came i out with TTT, so that's what we should expect from him.

Well we all know that he has always been a revivalist artist , but the whole thing where he had to use old-school analogue equipment and techniques to give his sound a more authentic 60's and 70's feel was cool back in 90's and 00's, but now it's becoming more redundant and gimmicky. I just hope this new album will challenge his audience and he can do different things musically.

The appeal of TTT was that he was influenced by old soul. In the TTT songs you see that they bought something original to the songs. With his solo material it just seems like he is straight up imitating a song or a sound, and that makes it gimmicky. And of couse people are desprate for some good music, so they'll jump on the badwagon and say that his material is great just because he's "different" from what's out there. Different doesn't always mean good. Honestly, I think he's gotten lazy production wise since 2000. And this is coming from a girl who was obsessed with Sons of Soul, and thought that Ask of You was the most sexy song ever, daydreamed to I Care, and could point out a Raphael Saddiq produced song with her eyes closed. Maybe one day he'll stop worrying about his "image" and start making sincere music again.

I wouldn't say he got lazy. I think it's harder make older music, especially if he's using analogue vs the productiin you use in the present time.

I think he's trying to being "real music" bvack, but he thinks he has to go retro and record retro for "real music." Atuff like "Be Here" and "Lady" was real music too, hey I don't know.

To me, yes he has gotten lazy. It started to show in the songs that he produced for other people after 2000. Same base chords. Shoot you can hear it in the Lucy Pearl material. He was always able to create a gem of a song with that something extra in it even if the artist was bad for ex. Total's Kissing You. The guitar in that song. As compared to the stuff he did on Q-tip last album just sounds pretentious.

Even though I think he has had a pretty consistent solo career, I don't think he has done anything quite mindblowing since this masterpiece (and this was with 3T):

I actually thought that Instant Vintage, Ray Ray and The Way I See It were great records, but none of them (including his production work and numerous collaborations post-1997) were earthshattering to the point of being deemed as extraordinary. His production values have become quite redundant and he hasn't really changed it up. His involvement on D'Angelo's Voodoo held up, but it seemed like he was just coasting after all of that. And let's not forget Lucy Pearl... But I can't deny this man's work ethnic and legacy. His solo career has been quite interesting, but I will always miss Tony Toni Tone. biggrin
