Bob Dylan... So since i had my Marley thread recently.
I must say in my top solo artist's i have Marley, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Prince, Joni Mitchell, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, Robert Johnson, Tina Turner & Paul Simon
But at the very top for me it's Dylan, His music from childhood just spoke to me so much. It got me interested in politics, i played his music when i was head over heels for someone, when i was happy, sad, angry or wanted to learn. His music means more to me then any artist and that is saying a lot.
He also made some of the greatest albums ever put to my ears and other i am sure

Bob Dylan is amazing. I have 29 Dylan CD's, second only to Prince. I just wish he was more consistant live, I have seen him 6 times. Three times he was great, the other three times he was not so great. I think he is the best lyricist ever. I like how you could make movies out of many of his songs, the details and characters are incredible.

Very true my friend, i saw him live last year with Willie Nelson & John Mellancamp.
Was Dylan great? not exactly i mean his band was fantastic, he played piano, harmonica & guitar. His voice is getting very rough and people where very mad he was not playing more ''hits'' i was happy just to see him though cause he's my idol. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I haven't been listening to him so much recently but if you get hooked there is so much great music to explore. Love The Bootleg Series - something a certain purple yoda needs to do. The new Mono Box looks tempting

I am a huge Dylan fan. I own all of his albums, including the horrible ones (although even those commonly considered horrible, i like to a certain extent).
'Series of Dreams' is one of my all time favorite songs, as is 'Blind Willie McTell'. I like his 80s stuff more than most people do... i count "Oh Mercy" as among his best works.

Blind Willie McTell is a fav of mine absolutely adore it
Politcal World, Where Tear Drops Fall & Shooting Star are fantastic song's from the Oh Mercy album. Idk if i can agree with up there with best work.. but definitely a 3.5/4 on that album for me still a great one Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Blind Willie McTell is what I play for people who claim that Dylan can't sing. The tension in that song he conveys.. amazing.
and "Mississippi" from 'Love and Theft' - - - another huge favorite.
I was a big fan of "Modern Times", not so much the last one although I thought "Beyond' Here Lies Nothin" was stellar * * *

Interestingly enough, I remember reading that there was a kind of mutual admiration between the two Bobs in the late 70s. Apparently, it came out in Dylan's music on Street Legal (an underrated classic) with the I-Threes-style backing vocal trio and the Marleyesque chord changes on songs like Changing of the Guard.
I don't know how much stock to put in the theory, although I reckon there's something in it, at least. I definitely like the idea of two of my musical heroes with different musical backgrounds and styles clocking each other and taking notes. And I have to say I prefer other artists' interpretations of his music. Brilliant writer, but I could never get past his singing voice.

He looks timeless in this movie. Everyone one else around him looks distinctly like they are captured in 1965. You could pluck him out of this film and transport him today and he would still look cool.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

i saw him last year in seattle.
He was crazy, and very great. He kept on making these strange bobby darin-esque poses, as if he was dramatically hitting power notes, and holding them for effect. He also kept turning around and pointing to people, i swear to god, who weren't there. Invisible people. He'd point and smile, as if the invisible person had just done something funny. He did it like 4 times throughout the show.
That said, amazing show. A little too "Together Through Life" heavy; I don't need to hear 'Jolene' or 'I Feel a Change Coming On' live, but 'Forgetful Heart' was great, and of course 'Beyond Here Lies Nothing' was amazing.
I love the voice he's developed, very ravaged, growling, bluesy. It suits him well.

i'm impressed you included "Dylan". I've read so many horrible horrible things about it, truth be told i've never even seen it for sale, although I assume itunes has it. You really recommend?

I mean it's personal preference. I mean every song but 2 are all covers. I absolutely love his covers of Man Of constant Sorrow, House Of The Rising Sun, Freight Train blues & Talkin New York one of his few original song's on the album is classic Dylan.
So do i reccomend? yeah i would say i would But to adress about the horrible thing's about it i will use this quote from Allmusic and rolling stone had a similar one, about Dylan.
''Bob Dylan's first album is a lot like the debuts by The Beatles And The Rolling Stones- a sterling effort, outclassing most, if not all, of what came before it in the genre. But similarly eclipsed by the artist's own subsequent efforts'' Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I think the "Dylan" album that is universally panned is the 1973 kiss-off CBS released as payback for Dylan shifting to Geffen for Planet Waves.
His first album, on the other hand, is definitely worth a listen.
