Curtis Mayfield - We People Who Are Darker Than Blue/Gimme Your Love (Love Song) (live)

LIVE!

Amid the shock of losing Lady Tee, December 26 was the 11th anniversary of Curtis' death. RIP.

Henry Gibson, one of my FAVE percussionist in soul music.

I don't know who's the pianist in the studio version, but thats one of the most beautiful piano playing in soul music as well.

We people who are darker than blue...

Are we gonna stand around this town and let what others say come true?

We're just good for nothin they all figure a boyish grown of shiftless jigga

Now we can't hardly stand for that.... Or is that really where it's at?

Pardon me brother while you stand in your glory

I hope you don't mind if I tell the whole story.....

Man, this song could very well be a sequel to Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come. Shit, if anything the first few notes of both bring me to tears before Sam or Curtis sing one word lol....

Every time I hear those songs, I get reflective (and hopeful).

Me too! I can remember them talking about his last album New World Order and the upcoming Rhino box set that was being prepared just before his death. That was one sad day! Radio stations were playing his music left to right in Chicago that entire week.

I'm gonna have to break out my copies of Superfly, Curtis, and Roots tonight, while playing some more of Lady T. Ugh, this is gonna be one lonely and sad week. sad
