there's always a lot of bullshit that hits #1, or at least very near the top of the charts. it isn't a new phenomenon. it's just the stuff you live through that you notice.

Very true. Even if I love most 80s hits, I recognize that I like a fair bit of crap. lol

Yeah some "independent" stuff is not as good unless someone is really truly inspired.

yeah people sometimes forget that most "indie" artists arent even indie, if u are on a small label but that small label is distributed by Universal, guess what, u are on a major label. If you truly want to be indie you have to either be with a label that distributes itself or put things out yourself with no major label hands in the project, so alot of what peeps thing is INDIE isnt really.

When I hear the word "indie" I don't automatically think people are talking about being on an independent label, but more a style of music. To me when I hear the word "indie" I think of guitar driven pop/rock that is a little left of center, not mainstream rock. Current examples to me would be Sonic Youth, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, MGMT, the Killers or the National. They are indie in sound even if they are on a major label. To me "indie" is the new "alternative".

I like that type of music. but I also like pop/dance driven things. I think there is a snobbery among certain music critics who look down on dance driven things sung by women. Both Katy Perry and Gaga have done some great songs that I enjoy. They aren't all superficial and talentless as some music critics mostly male would like us to believe. Madonna has never been given critical respect for the same reason.

But if for example I did a dance record like Gaga and put it out on an independent label, I wouldn't consider that indie.

What scares me the most is in 20-30 years, who from this generation is going to be getting into the RRHOF?

WARNING: All music purists will NOT like the answers to THIS^ question. But I have to be dead honest.

Beyonce & Usher are potential lock-ins for the R&RHOF within their generation of recording artists.

Usher is the only artist (besides The Beatles AND The Bee Gees) to ever have 3 or more number #1 hit singles within the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 Singles USA Chart.

Beyonce has been consider by many to be THE female artist of the 2000's, despite that Kylie Minogue (from the generation of Madonna/Janet/Whitney/Mariah) can also be consider a stronger argument on an international level. Nonetheless, Beyonce's impact in the USA is the most solid.

While i do like Usher's old stuff i don't think he deserves it... but you probably right!

Beyonce to

But i think the one who deserves it the most is Jack White, multi instrumentalist, 3 great band's. To me he is the greatest artist of this generation ala 2000-10

My core being hates me for it, but I like Katy's stuff. I just can't help it.

nod I like Katy Perry a lot but even I have no problem admitting that I hate her live performances because her vocals aren't very good. Honestly, I'll take Katy over Gaga and Ke$ha anyday of the week because at least Katy doesn't try to pretend like her sound and style are innovative like Gaga and Ke$ha seem to do. Seriously, those two are about as innovative and original as a brown paper bag. Katy doesn't take herself too seriously which is probably why I like her soo much. She does music because she loves it and she does write her songs and plays 4 instruments. Her first album was a solid POP album, nothing more; nothing less. Her second album has some good POP songs on it and seems to be consistent also. It's just POP music, so take it with a grain of salt and have fun with it. dancing jig

I like katy but only for her second album I prefer Gaga over her though. I know Gaga can be a turn off but I don’t know she has better records than katy. And actually I think she will last longer than her but who knows. They Both doing the same thing at the end of the day , I’m curious with Gaga new album.

Totally agree with you. I definitely prefer Katy's songs to either Gaga or Ke$ha, but I agree that Katy's live vocals are horrible. I like alternative/indie but I also enjoy pop music for what it is. It's fun and a laugh. We all need that sometimes. Although I like Katy, I don't know if she will last just because she's a terrible live performer and the music business today is all about touring. Of the three of them, Gaga is the best live singer so I think she has the best chance to endure.

nod I agree with you. Lady Gaga is a very good live performer. If I could take her live performing skills and vocals and put them with Katy Perry's lyrics and image/personality, I'd be super happy. biggrin

I hate Katy Perry's voice. Awful and irritating. Her voice is at it's worse in "Fireworks". I'll admit I like maybe two of her songs, but I really think she's talentless for the most part.

I'm going to fall on the side of Katy Perry not sucking. If she's used auto tune it's a production choice, not a necessity. Do some youtube searching for her live videos. She sings just fine, better than others who will remain unnamed. Now, the SONGS she's written and/or recorded in the last few years are another thing. Most of them are just ridiculously bad, but as usually the pop music listening public at large is eating them up.

Oh! Don't forget to look up Katy Hudson and listen to the christian music she abandoned in order to get her tits out and sing about kissing girls (I really like that one, though lol ).

It wasn't really her faith. She was a Christian singer when she was a teenager. Her father was a minister and encouraged her to do that. People change as they grow older and come to their own conclusions about faith and what they want to do.
