I've actually ranked them all with a formula based on my top 10 albums and songs from each year. lol

Anyway, right now, the top 3 look like:

1. 1982

2. 1983

3. 1989

It's the year that I first started really following music, so it is filled to the brim with nostalgia.

That said, Rhythm Nation 1814, Like a Prayer and Disintegration are all comfortably within my top 10 albums ever. woot!

I'm surprised that the '80s are getting so much love. It seemed like there was a lot more going on in the '60s and '70s and creativity kind of dried up in the '80s. Yes, there are exceptions but for me music was much more adventurous prior to the '80s.

If you put a gun to my head I guess I would pick 1964/1965 and maybe 1977/1978.

*Prince finally crossing over into the mainstream with hits like "1999" and "Little Red Corvette"

*Michael Jackson's amazing success with the 'Thriller' album and the incredible 10-minute video for the title track

*MTV and the video revolution, plus MTV finally airing videos by black artists

I was going to say 1976 and 1978. Actually '76 through '78 were pretty good years for music in my book. All kinds of Soul, Funk, Jazz Fusion, and Classic Rock. Most of my favorite albums, of all genres, fall within those years. But I'm thinking that probably has to do with the age I was at the time (they say the music from your mid-teens is the music you'll cherish most throughout your lifetime).

1984 in my opinion was the best year for music. Those of you who were born in the 90s missed out greatly because that was the year when music was fun and it was a huge event. Every TV show and commercials featured an artists at that time. Music had variety of TV shows and networks (America's Top 10, Solid Gold, AB, Soul Train, Friday Night Videos, MTV, BET, NY Hot Tracks, Night Tracks, Video Music Box, local music video shows and channels, even cartoons had music videos like Kidd Video and Alvin and the Chipmunks). There was a lot of commercialism in music at that time as far as artists promoting Pepsi and Coke, but as a kid, I didn't care, it was all fun to me. Awards shows today really suck, but back then, the Grammys and the AMAs were an event. It started with Michael Jackson sweeping in 83-84 awards, but I vividly remember the year after 84-85 awards when Prince, Tina Turner, and Lionel Richie won awards, and those awards were a lot of fun to watch and there was a large variety of artists and genres. Looking back, that was the year in which there were many artists to choose from, MJ, Prince, Madonna, Cyndi, Lionel, Tina, Huey Lewis, Bruce, Culture Club, Pointer Sisters, Billy Ocean, Jacksons (all of them had records out in 84), Van Halen, Run DMC, New Edition, Ray Parker, etc.
