Britneys Voice

I know she gets a lot of hate for the way she uses her voice, but she used to be a great singer. If you watch videos of her as a child right up until she signed with Jive, you can hear how powerful and soulful her voice was, it even shows in bits on her Baby one more time album (which i am the proud owner of). From a physiological point of view can she ever get that voice back fully?

I believe faint traces of it is still there http://www.youtube.com/wa...5KqubAnOYA

Poor Britney, she doesn't think she has a great voice herself, but i think she is just lazy, she needs Seth Riggs or someone to help her out.

Or maybe it's the fact that she was never a good singer to begin with. Let's not delude ourselves. confused

she ruined her voice with smoking and it's too bad cause she has a lot of catchy songs and good writers

she had a respectable voice as a child in those old tapes and on her first album, but it got worse though sometimes she had good moments like on Every Time.

Voice is the last thing you think of when you hear Britney's name. Thank god for production, beats and good music producers. I dont think her music would fared that well if it wasn't for studio magic. Also, I can't tell what her "singing" voice is anymore because, apart from vocal animation on her album, the entire production of her tours are lipsynched.

Pretty disposable, but that's the key of her charisma: her voice is pure pop, and it works...

Exactly. Now if she could only have a little more substance as an artist/songwriter. I think that's how Madonna had graduated as well.

She's just working with bad producers, that's all.

She must be the first recording artist who used to be a good singer up until he/she started recording

It does. I find her much more enjoyable than Beyonce and we all know that Beyonce can definitely sing

I don't think she ever had a good voice. It always sounded flat and odd confused but that's not why she's successfu anywayl. No one's checking for Britney songs because of her voice. It's because she has catchy songs with good productions.

Britney never had a great voice to begin with, but she had a serviceable voice which was well suited to her style of pop music. As long as she focused on danceable pop tracks, she was okay, but her vocal limitations were really exposed on her ballads. confused But the years of smoking and drinking have probably ruined whatever vocals she had.

Omg, that hurt my ears and soul. Why couldn't they give something like that to Christina instead? That song just doesn't seem all that suited to her.

I think Britney sounded good early at one point in her career, but that point of that short pencil broke and there was no sharpener , sorry to use the pencil metaphor but that is all i could think of right now lol shrug Anyway, Christina A. can sing, i think. She sounds soulful to me surprisingly. Madonna even said in her movie truth or dare i think, correct me if I'm wrong but she even said that she is not the greatest singer or dancer and the World but she is happy she made it and blessed. I mean Brits voice isn't the greatest, nor her songs. . .either. . .but heyyy what could you do? pray

Her voice is fine. It wore a bit during the Britney/In The Zone eras but that's when she first took up smoking. Sometimes it's better to listen to acapella cuz her songs are very busy. Also remember, her label took a year to form her image and sound, part of that was changing her voice. Britney was very obedient back in that time, and used the voice they told her to but IMO her nuances are her way of inserting parts of her own real voice into her work. When she broke away from her label in 2004-2007 she did NOT use the typical Britney voice for anything she recorded during that time.

Her voice was wonderfully versatile on Blackout - listen to Break The Ice (deeper and falsetto) and Hot As Ice (high pitched, bratty tone) then Why Should I Be Sad (soulful, quiet, deeper). She's capable of doing a lot of little things with her voice.

Examples: Gimme More: "Centre of attention/Even when we're up against the wall" She starts off high, holds the end of "attention" then goes straight down for the next line.

Break The Ice - "That's what I'm saying" - the way she holds the note on "saying".

Baby One...- The MJ-esque "ah!"'s she does throughout..."*ah*the reason I breathe *ah* is you" and of course the "I shouldn't have let you gooooooo" at the beginning. What other artist at 16 was paying that much attention to vocal detail/nuances?

IMO - If U Seek Amy, Radar, Womanizer, Me Against The Music are some of her worst songs and are not good examples of her best vocals at all. Avoid.

This is a great site for more in depth research into her voice/songs (it does get a bit overly worshipping sometimes though):

http://britneyology.com/articles/the-in-depth-series/

"Speaking on video about Britney as an artist, Corte Ellis commented “A lot of people have a misconception about Britney, but she’s really great at what she does. She knows what it is that she wants, and she’s a professional. She goes in the booth and she’s not one of those people where she’s singin’ it and you go ‘Alright, let’s let Britney slide and we’ll fix it in the mix’. She’s not one of those people where you fix it in the mix. She likes to get it right and she works at it till she gets it right. I just wanted to say that.”

Why do peoplel always have to name drop Janet whenever discussing Britney's vocal? Use Madonna, if anything. Janet could sing a live ballad more tastefully than Britney can attempt. Her slow tunes and ballads are done quite nicely and are very enjoyable.

I'd hate to see Britney attempt this at 5:20 - 5:35

That was painful to listen to! Proof that you don't need a voice to be famous, just an image to keep people guessing.

I really need to go listen to a real singer to cleanse my ears

You can't be serious falloff

Britney was always a bad singer even as a child. Btw, growling isn't belting.
