30 years ago today...my other music idol was shot and killed by a deranged so called 'fan' .....john lennon was a complex man.....could be very kind then very cruel.....campaigned for peace and love while largely ignoring his first son and sisters for long periods of time but he was painfully honest and real.....has there ever been an album has heartfelt and open from a major music star as his 1970 album ' plastic ono band ' .....dont think so........ his music will live on forever.....rip john....it still hurts

what i loved about him was that he got to the very top with the beatles...looked around....said this is total bullshit and then went all weird and arty..started using his fame for things he thought really mattered ...broke up the beatles then released some of the most open and painfully honest albums ever released.....watched a tribute programme last night and jack douglas (producer of double fantasy) said that he knew john lennon personally but that all the people who listened to his music who never met him also knew him very well because johns music WAS him.......what a waste of a genuinely brilliant and fasinating man....

I remember coming home switching on my lil' round orange JVC TV and our local NBC station, interrupted regular programming and simply stated, John Lennon had been shot. Fifteen minutes later they interrupted again to announce Mr. Lennon had died. It wasn't until the following morning more details where given about the circumstances of his death. As Bob mentioned, Mr. Lennon was brutally honest about himself . . . how he saw and preceived others. I wish the interviews he did with the late David Susskind and Dick Cavett could be shown.

Even though he died a decade before I was born, I've always idolized john lennon... mainly because we went to the same schools, grew up in the same area, and people from Liverpool are often regarded as working class theives who have the IQ of a peanut, but here is this guy from a small port city in england who changed the world forever and proved that just because you come from somehwere that most people regard as a waste of space it doesn't mean you can't go on to change the whole world.

The film "nowhere boy" is quite a good watch, its all about his school years and how he formed the beatles. Was so surreal seeing the park I frequent and the school I went to on the big screen. There's one part where he's outside the school gates and flashes the girls his cock and he's standing in the exact spot I used to stand and wait for my friends after school... madness.

It also stars Kristen Scott Thomas as his Aunt Mimi, who as you probably know co-starred with Prince in Under the Cherry Moon. I like to think that because the song he wrote about her (Better With Time) would have been written around the time she was filming, Prince payed her a visit and she gave him a tour around Liverpool lol... he would definatley have at least seen the film, which makes me strangley happy for some reason knowing he has seen all the places I often go to.

I recomend this documentary film on John that came out this year...

Being a Beatles fans since 1964.. he was incredible, and will forever be in my heart.

His music stop being relevant after 1971, and his 70s crazy years almost destroyed his legacy, but what the hell, he's still one of the greatest of all time, and God knows that there would have been a Beatles reunion sometime in the mid-80s...

I've been to many of the places you mention in your post. Been past Mendips a few times, he was a bit of a posh kid on the quiet eh? Quite a leafy suburb is Walton. At least after 30 years he's still remembered as the greatest scouser who ever lived and the leader of the second best band in Liverpool... the first being The Real People

My tribute to John......I miss him...

Being only 20 years old, I was not around to enjoy John Lennon during his peak years with the Beatles, his solo years after the Beatles, or alive to even enjoy his presence in this world. But nevertheless, he is a man who has influenced me in my life, even though I was born 10 years after he was brutally taken away from this world, at the age of 40.

Growing up, I was introduced to the Beatles at 4 years old. Paul was initially my favourite...but I developed a fondness for John. Something about him set him apart from the rest. He was a bit of a misfit from the rest, spoke his mind unapologetically, and always followed his instinct, sometimes to his own detriment. But he was a paradox, and naturally I was very much drawn to that. He didn't believe in God or a higher resolve, but yet was so noble and so giving, so caring and so concerned with the state of the world. And it showed in everything he did, from his music to his everyday life.

I know he wasn't the conventional celebrity. He didn't have tons of security, hide his whereabouts, or make himself untouchable to his fans. He loved his fans, and was always willing to sign an autograph or take a photo with his fans. He was open, and let people come near him. All the interviewers who met him always said he was the most down to earth person you could ever meet. I wish I had the oppurtunity to find this out for myself, but one day, I'm sure I will.

On December 8, 30 years ago, John Lennon was taken away from us by 4 gun shots, fired from Mark David Chapman's 5-shot revolver. Since then, the world has not been the same. We lost a talented musician, a humanitarian, a father, a husband, and a legend. All because of the selfishness of a social misfit, who wished to be known in history as the man who killed Lennon. You got your wish, Chapman. And now, you are paying the price. I hope you realize you deprived the world of someone real special, and sadly, you deprived Julian and Sean of their father, and Yoko her husband. Despite my rage at what you've done, as a fan, I forgive you. And hope one day, you can come to terms with what you've done, and the demons that drove you to commit such a thing.

I notice, that it seems all good, caring people are either broken by us, or taken from us by selfish, corrupted individuals. John Lennon was killed by a delusional fame-seeker. We lose our heros, our humanitarians, the people given the task to change the world, and inspire us to take up the challenge as well. In death, we remember them. But in life, we take them for granted. Blessed are they, the fans, their families, and their true friends, who appreciate them that change the world while they are alive, and preserve their memory when they are gone. I was lucky enough a few years ago, to go to Central Park and visit his memorial. I said a prayer for him...perhaps he heard. I hope to visit again one day. In any case, I'll always remember John for the joy he brought into my life with his music, and the message he gave me to change my life. He influenced me as a musician, and I'll be forever thankful to John for giving me the resolve and the desire to help change the world.

I can only imagine how the world would've been different had he been still with us. Perhaps collaborating with other artists...or singing on "We Are The World" in 1985.....still raising his family...seeing the new generation of fans and musicians that are inspired by him spring forth as the decades roll by.

While I never knew John personally, I feel a geniune kinship with him, almost like an older brother. His paradoxical nature always fascinated me, and his love and concern for the world only made me want to follow his example. He and Michael Jackson are some of a few people to have influenced me, and made me the person I am today.

And so, in my own words to John...

John, despite the fact I was born too late, I miss you. I know you never believed in God, but wherever you are now, I hope you are blessed and safe. Strawberry Fields Forever...you'll always have a friend and fan in me. On this day I light a candle for you...and remember...

Shine on, old diamond...

To the fans, remember...a perfect world is possible..all you have to do is Imagine...

Perhaps one day the world will live as one...

I don't know about the Beatles reunion... maybe there would have been, but it seems to me that the expectations would have been impossible to meet.

I do think there are some quality moments post-71, though - I'm a big fan of the Double Fantasy era stuff. And #9 Dream is just sublime.

But yeah... alot of dreck post-71 as well.

I've spent the day watching BBC America. All John Lennon, all day has been feeding my soul quite nicely.

I was a teen sitting in my grandparents' livingroom, watching late night television (David Letterman, I think) when an announcement suddenly came on stating that John Lennon had been shot. I couldn't believe it. The whole thing was surreal to me. I so looked forward to hearing his comeback album "Double Fantasy." John was full of the zest for life and music, after taking such a long break.... And looking forward to the future... I was 10 years old, went down to breakfast, saw my dad crying for the first time in my life then going upstairs to hide away. I'll never forget that.

I can remember so well, my brother watching Monday Night Football and me trying to fall asleep for school the next morning, and then hearing howard cosell talk about this man John Lennon. Since i didnt live through the beatles, i got their music from my brothers and when John died it was all over the place as was his, so i didnt really know his work, i knew the beatles but i was still young, but this ironically, is when my own creativity opened up, i started writing little stories about the beatles, weird, but from there starting writing little skits and plays for me and my classmates, and from there it grew and grew and grew, and the way to appreciate music as something to inspire not just to dance and party too, came from this man first and foremost!
