Eric Benet - Sometimes I Cry > Prince?

This ballad is better than any falsetto ballad Prince has done is YEARS.

He took the falsetto crown just like D'Angelo did when he dropped Untitled.

I still think Maxwell is a better singer than all of them but I have to give Eric props on this one. Its a serious display of his vocal skills.

This is a good song. I'm looking forward to Benet's album, I believe it will be an authentic soul record.

It's a good song, but I'm I the only one who thinks it's weird for a guy to do a song that's heavily influenced by his girlfriend's ex-husband?

Either way, I think Call My Name is a better song, and Prince has written many songs better than that.

Sometimes I Cry is a good song, though.

I don't think Eric would think that way. He may have done it as an ode to Prince, but definitely not an "I can do better" type thing. He has said in many interviews that Prince has been a major influence to him.

I wonder if Prince is that big of an issue for Mani and Eric. Somehow, I really think this woman has truly moved on.

Mayte, to me seems to still have a connection with Prince... maybe a part of them are still in love... or in love with "the way they were"... but not Mani. She seems more pragmatic... "it didn't work, oh well, keep it moving".

I am not knocking Mani, really it is not a bad thing to do.

But back to Eric.... I don't think Mani's ex affects his music as much as HIS ex affects his music.

This kills any ballad Prince could do today but I think it's more a tribute than an attempt to compete with the midget : great song !

And oh yeah, vocally, Eric Benét is better than old Maxwell. This competition isn't even fair.

BlaqueKnight have you seen Maxwell live recently ? Because I've seen him a couple months ago, and while he is still a good singer he could barely hit a high note and was relying on us (public) to do it for him. This was actually painful to see. Was Maxwell a great singer when he was young ? yes, is he still a great singer ? no, he's still good but his voice is not what it used to be. Benét hasnt lost anything and could teach the maxwell that I saw live that night if they had to practice singing together.

I saw him on the first leg of his BLACKsummernights tour.

Maybe he was sick when you saw him?

He did fine at the show I went to.

And I'm sure at no time while screwing Mani did he ever think 'I can do BETTER than Prince!' either, right? wink

Eric has done a few odes to Prince. This is DEFINITELY NOT the first one.

well let me just say I like Pretty baby better than anything on Planet Earth. BY FAR.

Eric can't touch the Prince of the 80s and 90s... but then again, the Prince of 2010 can't touch that Prince either.

Interesting point. smile

I also wonder what went through Mani's mind the first time she heard the lyrics.

I wouldn't classify him as a Prince-wannabe. He has always acknowledged Prince as a big influence in his music. But a wannabe, I wouldn't say that.

I think Eric is just a singer who wants to be bigger than what he is. If you think about it, he's always tried to make good music, but it doesn't really have the mass appeal that he would like.

I remember when his last album came out, he did a radio interview where he was pretty-much begging and pleading with his record company not to drop him. He kept making statements that he was so grateful to WB and Reprise records for the opportunity. He hoped that his latest album would sell well so he could keep a job.

wow,

well I will buy this album.

I couldn't stand this mother scratcher for the longest after what he did to Halle.

But in spite of that, I really liked his Hurricane CD, and had to break down and buy it.

razz I played the hell out of that CD.

Now, I guess I have matured, and realize that people make mistakes. Just because he is a bad husband, doesn't mean that he can't do his job well, that is be a good singer.

I hate to say it but I too think Maxwell's voice isn't close to what it used to be and I thought of that when I heard this Benet cut, as well. Like, why is Benet still sounding as crisp as he did in 95 and Maxwell, well, is not?

Max's concert appearances last run were cringeworthy. I hope he is taking some time for vocal training, resting, and not smoking because his falsetto could be a musical treasure if he gets it back. With that said, he is still listenable on wax but I dont think I'd put out money for a concert again unless I'd heard he'd really gotten the chops back.

Benet's voice is really nice here.
