I Have tried Really Hard To like REO Speedwagon

sad Sorry not to be rude to any fans on here....

I bought one of there greatest hits, i have always disliked them, thinking there song's where whiny, silly and they where ok musicians. Also i can't get into Kevin Cronin's voice...

I Also tried Hi Infidelity Shake it Loose was kind of a cool song... but beyond that NADA

I Really did make an effort to like the band, but i just can't get into them... am i just not listening to the right stuff by them?

Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Why have you been trying to like them if you've always disliked them?

They don't seem to be an artist that's worth investigating if you don't already like them. Not much beyond the surface, methinks. lol

Because i try to give artists a chance, why hate them unless you listen to a bunch of there song's not just radio hits?

Well to be an honest no one can really have an honest opinion on an artist, or whatever till they have listened to everything done by them known the history etc... I mean there are plenty of artists that i cant stand and then base that opinion on the 5 or 6 songs i have heard but does that really give me the call on that artist. Now alot people think REO is a ballad band, i mean 99% of the public probably thinks it began with Keep On Loving you, but in reality this band started about 10 years earlier as a more "rock" outfit with these long songs same with bands like Journey and Styx, these guys were doing "YES" like epic 10 minute songs, much like Genesis, before the 80's. But i dont think we can really base an opinion on some singles, to me singles are usually the worst an artist has to offer, and are a very simple "Calling card" to an artist, and i think we all know that "calling cards" are usually not even what an artist is about. So im not a big REO fan by any means at all, i do own a few albums but to me i never got into them album wise, others like Styx i was more into and they to get lumped into this ballad band thing, and that again is a calling card for them but they are a deeper outfit than say "Babe" or "Lady". So i think going in the opinion is already there most of the time, i mean, i know im not going to like the new Lil Wayne, i mean because i dont like him, so he could come out with the hottest shit ever and i wont like it because i dont like him already, hard to change that.

Good point my friend!

See i always knew they where a Journey type band, i will admit i like Journey. Sure they have there poppy hits, but there great musicians. I even like the pre Perry stuff. There kind of like Hall & Oates they have some sappy song's. But you have to look deeper cause they are great musicians.

Speaking of which i did not dig H&O till i got there albums...

I would say REO's greatest moment was Hi Infidelity, and that was like 1981. Everything after that sucks, especially I Can't Fight This Feeling.

Go back a few years and check out Flying Turkey Trot, 157 Riverside Avenue (live), Roll With the Changes, Like You Do, Golden Country....

I am so all about Gary Richrath's guitar playing. And he looked so cool with a les paul.

I only ever owned "You Can Tune A Piano, But You Can't Tuna Fish", but probably haven't even listened to that album in 30 years. Their music brings up nostalgic memories from way back in the day, but they're never in regular rotation on any of my playlists.

I believe they were always more appreciated in the Southern regions of The United States.
