and yes, you can hear the Prince influence, although I'm not sure why he would try to hide his influences. Everyone has influences.

His songs haven't lived up to the hype. He's akin to a bad karaoke singer.

I have to disagree there. "Beautiful Girls" has a great melody and vocal hook. The track is kind of weak but the vocal hook is strong.

But, if this were the first song anyone ever heard from him, I'd have to agree. This does have that karaoke feel to it.

I heard him scream "OWWAH!" and the low-tuned Linn rimshot, but those synths are on some otha otha 4real

Eh..

I love that the Linn Roger is having a revival nowadays, but if you wanna pay Prince a tribute at least do it the way he did; overdub real drums on the Linn.

"dreams"? hmm

Not many Prince songs were ALL synth like that either. Where's the live bass and guitar?

Yeah, that's definitely got Prince splattered all over it.

You could've posted that song with a Prince picture, claiming that it was a hidden track from the Japanese version of 20TEN and most of us would've believed it (to a degree).

nod

It's not about hiding them, but rather, incorporating them into your own work where you create something a little more original. If not, be so good that you obscure the original or influence. Like, really make it your own.

For the most part, he's been doing that. His voice doesn't sound like Prince at all. On his newest single, he's singing in the vein of MJ. I think he is just paying tribute to his influences. The hook in his songs is his voice. He has a unique voice, and that's what ties his songs to each other. No matter what style he sings in, his voice is always the same. His tone is unique.

Ai, for real. I saw him last month in London and he reminded me of Prince in so many ways. Height-wise, swagger, the way he would direct his band to hit-on-the-one, hit-on-the-two, three-hits, all while he's doing some dance move, and then he gives up his guitar, passing it, not tossing it into the air before saying something that melts the girls and has the guys roaring. Then the guy can play piano, though I didn't see that at the show. I didn't know most of his songs, but I enjoyed the show a lot!

Bruno Mars sounds more like MJ and you could hear the MJ influence all through his music and voice. To me he is the closest thing to being the next MJ of this era, excluding the dancing part. Bruno has a nice voice, and has made some pretty good songs. Very talented artist. He doesn't sound like Prince at all. Maybe this particular track may sound like one of Prince's songs, but I don't see any Prince-related vibe at all.
