JOE TEX The Early Years

I'm lookin' up/listenin' to soe of Joe Tex's early records (more specifically his early material with Dial) and it's crazy how only two of his records charted. So before 'Hold What You've Got' between 1955 and 1964, only 1960s' "All I Could Do Was Cry' (Pop 102) for Anna and 'I'd Rather Have You' (R&B 44) for Dial in early 64' charted. His single right after was 'Hold What You've Got' released in late 64'. Of Course, Dial had just signed a major distribution deal with Atlantic right before 'Hol' came out ...

He wrote and recored a single in 1961 titled "Baby' You're Right." His (at the time friend and former label mate) James Brownb liked the song and recorded it. It was a hit for him ...

But he had plenty of nice tunes, chart worhty tunes I would say.

Joe Tex was almost with Motown Records. After leaving King, and some other lebels, he ended up on Anna Records. His first single for Anna, a cover of Etta James hit "All I Could Do Was Cry" was his first charting single. He probably covered the tune cause the writers of the song owne th label Anna Records.

David Ruffin, Lamont Dozier, Johny Bristol and Marvin Gay(e) were all on Anna. Barret Strong hit with 'Money' on the label and the label was absorbed by Motown the next year. Either Joe Tex had already left the label or he wan't included.

My grandmother had some of his 45's.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
