Taylor Swift sells 1 MILLION in 1st week!!

Taylor Swift's amazing sales: Who else has sold a million in a week?

Taylor-Swift-million-in-a-week

What do Lil Wayne, the Backstreet Boys, and Garth Brooks have in common? They’ve all released albums that sold over one million copies domestically in their respective first weeks on shelves. If industry projections are accurate, Taylor Swift is about to join that elite group thanks to Speak Now‘s spectacular debut week.

The instant-million club is a strange place. The very first member was Garth Brooks, whose Live Garth set sold 1.08 million copies back in 1998. At the time, no one had ever sold that many records in one sales frame. Swift’s victory this week brings things full circle in a couple of ways, then — not only is she the first country artist since Brooks to join the club, but she’s joining at a time when moving a million is similarly unheard of. In 1998 and 2010 alike, this is a rare accomplishment worth noting.

Things were different for a brief, wild period around the turn of the century. Brooks ushered in an era where pop stars routinely broke the million mark. It started in May 1999, when the Backstreet BoysMillenium sold 1.13 million in a week, but the following year was the really crazy one. In March 2000, *NSYNC shattered the previous record with an astounding 2.42 million-copy opening week for No Strings Attached. (*NSYNC’s record still holds today, by the way.) Britney Spears joined the club that May by selling 1.32 million copies of Oops!…I Did It Again. Eminem followed suit in June with 1.76 million copies of The Marshall Mathers LP, the first rap album in this category. Limp Bizkit became the club’s first (and last) hard-rock members that October, selling just over 1 million copies of Chocolate Starfish & the Hot Dog Flavored Water. In November, BSB lapped everyone else, scoring a second instant-million badge for Black & Blue (1.6 million). Finally, the Beatles rounded out the busy year by selling 1.26 million copies of their compilation 1 during Christmas week.

The club’s membership rolls began quieting down after 2000. *NSYNC went for two in a row with July 2001′s Celebrity (1.88 million). Eminem did the same a year later with June 2002′s The Eminem Show (1.3 million). No new members appeared until February 2004, when Norah Jones sold just over a million copies of Feels Like Home. That March, Usher landed an R&B record by selling 1.1 million copies of Confessions in a week. Another year went by before 50 Cent‘s The Massacre moved 1.14 million units in March 2005. He was the last new member until June 2008, when Lil Wayne shifted almost exactly 1 million copies of Tha Carter III. And that was it until this week.

Swift’s entry into the instant-million club means more today than it might have 10 years ago. Many major artists this year have struggled to sell 500,000 copies in a week, let alone a million. As you can see from the list of previous million-sellers, Swift’s feat doesn’t necessarily guarantee her a long career in the future, but it’s undeniable proof of how important she is right now — and it’s fantastic news for a music industry that could really use some positive headlines.

What do you think of Taylor Swift’s incredible sales week? Surprised she pulled this off? Think she can sustain a high level of sales over the coming months? Which instant-million club member’s career do you think hers will most resemble in the end? Speak now in the comments.

Uhh, she's a country artist. They usually never have trouble selling their albums or concert tickets because they have those two magical words on their side: dedicated fans. At leasts she's a talented artist, so I'm not mad at her. I actually think it's about damn time that an artist, who takes the initiative to write her own songs, play instruments, and not dress like a hooker, sells more than the artists who rely on producers to make their hit records while they dance around like over-priced strippers. She's proven that you don't have to let your ass hang out and be a puppet or a tool to make a platinum selling album and I respect her for it.

Not real country, she's pop. Her music and a lot of the other "country" today is just some pop music with a little twangy guitar. It has nothing in common with George Jones, Bob Willis, Loretta Lynn, Hank Snow, or Alabama.

It's a good CD, however....

too many songs in her catalog sound like Romeo and Juliet

You (long pause), do something. (long pause) Something else. (long pause) Something more.

I (long pause), do something. (long pause) Something else. (long pause) Something more.

On one hand, it's nice to have some consistancy. On the other hand, it gets old after 5 songs.

Still it's nice to know, when our bodies wear out, we can get another

This is a perfect example of how beneficial it is to have people at your label who are behind you 100%. I went to Target yesterday, and they had her new CD stationed right up front in the music section and they had like 6 full shelves of the CD. That's promotion!

However, I really don't get why people adore her so much. I have to admit I'd never really heard any of her songs. I was channel surfing and the other night and she was performing on one of those annoying reality dance shows so I decided to find out what all the fuss over her was all about. At best, she is a average singer. There is nothing about her voice that distinguishes her from anyone else. And whatever song she was singing was totally forgettable. The fact that she and Justin Bieber are the biggest sellers in music right now, it's really sad. I have toally given up on the music business. It's lost forever.

She really should thank Kayne. His being an @$$hole helped this project along something serious.

Shes a Blonde White Teen Singer singing about "safe" issues, parents can get it for their kids, aka the Backstreet Boys selling a million, or some disney cd etc... I mean i really have no interest in her heartbreak teeny songs, but, got to respect her at least writing and playing music, BUT, its where u grow from this, i mean ALOT of her songs have the same sound and themes, but shes a kid, and shes safe and that sells overall. As for Kayne helping her....hmmm this chick has been selling huge since day one, so, im not going to give Kanye "credit" there, if anything he might get more light reaching out to her than vice versa.

Co-Sign Taylor and Justin fit the safe white formula. I give them props for writing their own material but let's be honest it is not that good and only time will tell if they can hang around for 20 years. Kind of hard to do that if your audience is 12 and you never bother to grow as an artist.

Exactly. I never knew she existed until that incident. Besides, makes sense that she would sell a mil. Dedicated fans are behind her. I still think that's why she won Artist of the Year at the American Awards. Maybe i'm wrong, but that's how I saw it.

The best way to put it is that black people didn't know who she was lol she was doing very well way before kanye she was everywhere. I love me some kanye but I can't give him all the credit on that LOL but it did help no doubt. Maybe because I listen to different things I knew who she already was but people will argue that she was already known before.
