Phil Collins Is Back...And On the R&B Charts!

http://www.amazon.com/Goi...amp;sr=8-1

I had no idea Phil Collins released a new CD, and it's Top 20 on the R&B charts!eek It's performing better on that chart than it is on the Pop Top 200. Go figure.

I heard earlier this year that Phil was going to release an album of Motown covers, but didn't know it had been released. Both Phil & Peter Gabriel released cover albums this year.

It's the worst record since Britney Spears last record .... Phil is a limited singer with limited talent and should not cover motown records ...rubbish:-(

I don't think the album is horrible, but it is much better than the constant "songbook" cds from Rod Stewart. Phil did stick to the original arrangements and melodies.

People forget that Phil had a BIG hit in the 80s with a Motown remake.

lol

My problem with the project is that Phil's voice has changed so much that you can harldy tell it's him. Musically, I like it....but vocally (on some songs) he should have chosen a different song..

Is that just him showing his age vocally or did something happen along the way?

I just know his voice sounds a lot weaker then I remember it from his 80s hits.

I don´t remember such a hit. What coverversion are you speaking of?

So, now that the Conservative Party is back in charge again, is Phil going to move back to England?

I read he vowed not to go back as long as the Labour Party rules Britain and moved to Switzerland, that rich mufucka. lol

Some say he´s an excellent drummer though.

I just know his voice sounds a lot weaker then I remember it from his 80s hits.

I don't know about his voice, but he can't drum anymore because he injured his back on the Genesis 2007 tour and had some surgery. Peter Gabriel said earlier this year there was some talks to go out with the 5 member Genesis and perform the Lamb album, but because Phil couldn't drum, nothing became of it. The last tour was supposed to be the quintet, but Peter decided he didn't want to tour. Since Peter backed out, Steve Hackett figured the trio was the most popular, and there was no point in him doing it without Pete. So Genesis used their usual touring members Chester Thompson & Daryl Stuermer. Here's the group getting inducted in the R&R Hall Of Fame earlier this year.

Phil was the drummer for Brand X in the late 1970s.

You must be tone-deaf. Phil Collins to me is a great singer and has enough range to do this kind of project, and considering Rod Stewart's affinity for doing cover albums, he should be given a chance to be listened to fairly and without cultural bias. I haven't heard Collin's latest records, but I was listening to "Face Value" from 1981, and Phil was only beginning to peak vocally when he went solo after Genesis.

Because he is an English singer, his timbre and inflections would give the Motown songs he's covering a new perspective. Collins and Sting are two of my favorite musicians from England that are credible to do these songs justice. And as someone previously mentioned he is one hell of an instrumentlist as a drummer. I remember seeing "Classic Albums" on VH1, and Collins played a couple of drum beats and when he played a Motown shuffle beat, he blew me away. I bought a couple Wendy and Lisa re-issues and I plan on picking this cd up to support the cat.

Glad he is back but a shame its a damn covers album. I hate covers albums.

I didn't mind "Can't hurry love", and he rearranged "Groovy kind of love" that you would barely recognize the original.

It's a great song whomever does it, but I dug his take of this though:-

Produced by Babyface.

I know he is a fan of Phil. In general, he always got more respect in the US then his native UK. British music press despise him.

Ok version. I like the fact it had been re-arranged.

But this version, of an obscure and overlooked Collins song, was a really nice find:-

Black people in the US seem to respect Phil more then white people in the UK LOL.

I think it's because most of his music is R&B-oriented or at least R&B influenced that we see right through it from his vocals to the musical arrangements.

You can't tell me "I Missed Again" wouldn't have been recorded by Marvin or Smokey or Stevie or the Spinners or Earth, Wind & Fire or anyone like that. I didn't mind his version of the Supremes hit either.

I think of his albums, Face Value and Hello I Must Be Going! are up there with some of the best IMHO.
