'Queen Of Gospel' Albertina Walker Dies At 81 October 8, 2010
Albertina Walker, known as the “Queen of Gospel,” has died. She was 81.
Born in Chicago, the Grammy-winning Ms. Walker was a direct link to Mahalia Jackson. The gospel legend was impressed with Ms. Walker’s singing and encouraged her to perform, which led to the founding of her group, The Caravans. She later went on to a successful solo career. She had been ailing recently from emphysema and died in a Chicago hospital. She influenced the singing of Elvis Presley, Al Green, Aretha Franklin and Ray Charles, according to her website. Ms. Walker was a glowing presence at Chicago’s Gospel Festival, where she was always treated as a queen.

I met Ms. Walker many times during the GMWA conventions ....She stayed on my playlists from the 70's til now!

I sort of rediscovered this song after not hearing it for years. I loved gospel music of the late 70's - early 80's. RIP! "Funkyslsistah… you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude"!

She was always sitting on the side of the stage during the Chgo Gospel Music Fest's performances. A pioneer in her own right. Chicago will miss her. | |
