Musical Youth Unsung

I bitched about this ep, but I have to say it is one of the best they have done.

What gets me is that Unsung said that Musical Youth was the first black act to get a video in steady rotation on MTV in October of 1982. But hadn't Prince and MJ been on MTV by then?

Prince & Michael got on MTV in early 1983.

REALLY? Wow. Wasn't Shalamar on before then? I had no idea Musical Youth got a grammy nom and that they did a song with Donna Summer

I believe so. I don't know if Shalamar got as much heavy rotation as Musical Youth but they were played.

I just watched their story online. Brilliant documentary, I agree. Their story after the fame was very sad.

And yeah Musical Youth's "Pass the Dutchie" was nominated, I gotta look it up.

Now I know who the little guy was that Michael picked up while at a party, it was Michael Grant of Musical Youth. biggrin

Oh yeah I knew about their Donna Summer collaboration, the group didn't like it but they were forced to. Being kids, I guess the record label wanted them to be teenyboppers. They broke through before New Edition too.

To be honeest, I had to stop watching it halfway through. It is one thing to see that kind of fuckery happen to adults, another to see it happen with kids.

Identity

I intentionally cancelled the scheduled recording for fear the episode would bore me to death. Now, I wished I hadn't.

It wasn't boring at all. This ep really, really redeemed this series. I am not sure if it was the change of locale or if it was the fact that so little was known about the band, but this was one of the best ever, right up there with the Donnie, Debarge and Minnie eps.

Those boys were pimped then thrown away. They opened a lot of doors for black boy groups. but were never given credit for it. They were way more talented musically then New Edition...

Such sweet little faces they had! I had to turn it off because I wanted to kill the people who were supposed to have their best interest at heart.

They were very talented. I really learned something from this episode. I forgot to watch it on Monday. But TVOne has the eps online to watch now. I watched it yesterday on the website.

I can't remember which member is was I think it was Dennis, he was really talkin down on his former band mates. And if he hadn't got in touch with Michael in the past few years he would have talked anout him too.

Might've been him, I don't know. Apparently Dennis said he felt isolated by the brother duos of the group (the Waites and Grants).

And Dennis & Michael just reformed so that must've been a while back when they were still on bad terms.

the little boy made 1.5 million and a week later it was 50,000 dollars. those people were stealing from those boys.

i was upset about that. and i think that group was so cute, they had so much potential if only the record company didnt try to change up their musical style. Reggae fits their voices
