Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: The 2011 Nominees

[img:$uid]http://i52.tinypic.com/k2mdkl.gif[/img:$uid]

September 28, 2010

Bon Jovi, the Beastie Boys, Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Donovan, Tom Waits and LL Cool J are among the 15 artists nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.

Also on the list: Chic, Dr. John, J. Geils Band, Darlene Love, Lauro Nyro, Donna Summer, Joe Tex and Chuck Willis.

These are the first nominations for Bon Jovi, Donovan, Alice Cooper, Dr. John and Mr. Diamond; some of the others, including Chic, Donna Summer and Darlene Love, have been nominated numerous times but never made the final cut. (There’s hope for them, though: this year the Stooges finally made it in after having been nominated seven times.)

The inductees will be announced in December, and the 26th annual induction ceremony will be held on March 14 at the Waldorf-Astoria in Manhattan. Artists become eligible for nomination 25 years after the release of their first single or album, and the awards are voted on by more than 500 music professionals.

A notable omission among this year’s nominations: Kiss. Last year its fans got their hopes up when, after years of being snubbed, their heroes finally got a nod. (Those hopes were dashed when Kiss lost out to Abba.)

For the Rock Hall, that might be a risk: four years ago hundreds of members of the Kiss Army – a k a fans – protested at the Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, with slogans like “Thou Shalt Not Delay the Induction of Kiss” and, perhaps most frighteningly, Kiss costumes.

I hope Bon Jovi doesn't get in this soon. Any of the others are cool with me. Alice deserves it and so does Donna and Neil.

Donna Summer and Tom Waits should have been in long ago.

But once again, Rush is passed over. It defies logic. For BON JOVI to be nominated ahead of Rush is simply insane. Rush had been selling out arenas for years when Jon Bon Jovi was still practicing hair spray application and posing before a mirror in his parents' bathroom.

Only the Stones and the Beatles have more consecutive gold or platinum albums among rock bands than Rush.

They are STILL touring and drawing huge crowds. They have influenced countless hard rock bands that came after them.

And once again they are overlooked.

It's a joke.

BS! There are many other artists/bands that are more deserving than her. She's just known for disco.

Very much so! Laura and Donna should definitely get inducted now. Why hasn't LaBelle and Hall & Oates been nominated yet? mad

She certainly is nod Not only is she extremely talented, but her late-70s recordings were groundbreaking and took dance music in exciting new directions."I Feel Love" basically started the whole techno movement. She recorded the only listenable version of "MacArthur Park".On the 'Bad Girls' album, she was successfully blending disco with rock.

You know what?

Fuck this shit. I think these legends are more worth some stupid induction ceremony. I'm so tired of the mainstream bullshit.

I really am. Fuck this shit.

That's very dismissive of some great talent. Google Darlene Love. Nile Rogers and Bernard Edwards defined an era, and a sound, and stayed quite busy in the industry for years to come. They are deserving, as is Donna Summer. She was no puppet, and she can still wail like no one's business.

I'd vote for:

Bon Jovi

Alice Cooper

Donovan

Dr. John

Maybe Joe Tex

Anyone that votes for the Beastie Boys needs their head examined.

The problem IMHO is that it's called the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but it's not just rock. Which is fine, except they keep moving the line as to how far from rock they will go.

So some funkateers get in, but others don't. Some jazz musicians get in, others don't. And all the while, real rock bands like Rush and KISS are on the outside.

And you watch - Night Ranger will probably never get in or even nominated, yet they can, have and will continue to blow away 80% of the bands already in.

It's a mess.

That's the only two on the list that I give a damn about except maybe Joe Tex.

The R&RHOF is weird. I've kind of lost interest in all this nonsense. There's clearly quite a few people who deserve to be there and are actually, ya know, ROCK musicians or bands. There's also a good number of people who are in, or get nominated, that just leave me scratching my head. It's not really Rock & Roll hall of fame, it's a music hall of fame. With music tastes being so subjective the importance of this honor has begun to lose a bit of it's luster.

The ones in bold are the picks I'd make, looking at it objectively. Now if I weren't, then I'd put LL and Chic in there in place of Waits and Bon Jovi.
