Lady Gaga has been supportive of gays ever since I first heard of her. Her stance is nothing to fight against, it is to be embraced! She's gone completely out of her way to appear at this rally when she could've made a passive statement from her private jet and left it at that. If only more celebrities of such influence actually donated their time to real issues instead of drinking champagne in their mansions and being political pretenders... Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss...

I genuinly believe Lady Gaga is very passionate about gay rights but also can't help but think she is playing on it for PR purposes. She's no fool, she knows the gays are the ones mainly paying her bills & so will want to keep them happy. In the Alejandro video I was very disapointed about the way she played on stereotypes of gays, but at least she is going out of her way to actually try and make a difference. Anyone can say they support gay rights but few people actually make the effort to change the public psyche on the issue. So whatever her motivations, I say go gaga!

The Alejandro video was a very eloquent visual statement. It's about gay rights. It's about gay men not being able to come out and being trapped in sham marriages with women (hence the puppet strings) and about how religion and society play a role in this entrapment - hence the mob imagery (Stonewall) and the religious (primary Catholic) symbolism. The dysfunctional sex and gender-f**king are not coincidental, and the way they throw her around at the end is about them fighting back and taking their resentment out on the women they marry. It's a militant piece of work. She wasn't presenting stereotypes with that video.

I love me some Lady Gaga, but she makes a better singer and media provocateur than she does a pundit.
God bless her, and I think what she's TRYING to do is awesome. But the execution, whenever she opens her mouth, tends to leave me cold and reveals that me she is a bit of a mental midget.

Yeah the YouTube video was good enough. I admire what she's doing though, but it did come off a bit weird.

Smart move. She's working on adding more gays to her fanbase so they continue buying her awful shit like they do with Madonna and Kylie. That's how these no talent divas stick around so long.

Nobody can ever say Gaga has NO talent, whatsoever. You could say mildly or mediocre talent but never "NO talent". Just not true. Even when I disliked her, I knew she was a great singer and I was impressed that she wrote most of her own songs and did acoustic versions of them.

You are right. I should have said mediocre because that is what she exemplifies.

I still don't get the gay rights/meat analogy. As much as I appreciate most of her rhetoric, that bit seems pretty forced. I wish she would just come out and say "I sawweee, my little monsters! Momma's sorry that she tried to do politics as promotion ... but can you blame me? Momma's on top of the game in a global recession even after L.A. Reid and them over at DefJam dropped my ass and she gotta keep makin tha donuts! Please forgive me, little monsters! I LOVE YOU!"
Speaking of Gaga, things I wish for and meat ... I wish she'd eat something and post a YouTube video of that. All jokes aside, I hope she's not starving herself. Chile is passing out on stages from Ronkonkoma to Beijing. Girl, EAT SOMETHING! And while you're at it, sleep. Fuck what Akon said about sleep just being a state of mind - girl, fuck all that. Sleep. No - passing out on stage doesn't count.

Gaga kinda reminds me of Prince, she sometimes does things in riddles, that when you try to explain what she does, her explanations as to why weren't exactly good.

I interpreted that as, "See! My meat dress at the MTV awards wasn't just a vacuous, slightly dubious publicity stunt, it was all part of my passionate commitment to gay rights." "Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced." - James Baldwin

which is complete bullshit. yes, she's said and done a lot for gay rights, but she also uses it as a means of deflection any time someone calls her on anything. and the meat dress really has absolutely NO connection to gay rights. not even if you squint and turn it upside down and look at it sideways.
which is why i say that despite her good intentions, most of the time when she opens her mouth to espouse them, she comes off as an idiot.
but hey, every generation needs their gay icon queen, from Judy to Babs to Bette to Madonna to Kylie to Gaga. and as much as I enjoy a lot of what she does and what she's about, this generation of brain stems that are coming up deserve Gaga and she deserves them.
and I say that as something of a fan

I don't think it's new that she expresses a lot of her views and opinions through the clothes she wears. Her fashion is just as much her art as performing is, I don't understand why people don't get that yet. Anything you can create yourself is artistic expression, meaning isn't solely designated to words.

With fans like this.....
Thing is, it's a good thing that people's awareness on the issue has been raised, and even if it got shot down this time, it's likely that it'll get overturned if that pressure keeps up. Objectively, that's a good outcome from it.
I just thought the 'meat' reference was self-serving. And, tbh, overall, as much as one can say she's lending her profile to something that does good, it feels to me like the Cause is serving her image ("New Gaga! Now with Politics!"*) just as much as her celebrity is serving the Cause, even if that's not the conscious intent. It's hardly like she's making a sacrifice. Hank and Mitsy Biblethumper from Kentucky are never going to buy a Gaga record now, for sure, but were they ever going to anyway?? It'll do her no harm in the eyes of her fanbase; in fact, it will only consolidate her appeal there.
