September 21, 2010
A son of Detroit's Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, was attacked at a gas station near Plymouth and Evergreen on Monday night on the city's northwest side, a spokeswoman said this morning.
Eddie Franklin, 52, was attacked by three people – two men and a woman – and was undergoing emergency surgery, Franklin spokeswoman Gwendolyn Quinn said this morning. She did not release the name of the hospital, and his condition wasn't immediately known.
No additional details were available about the attack, Quinn said.
Detroit Police said they were looking into the matter but had no other information.
Eddie Franklin made a guest appearance on his mother's latest release earlier his year, singing "His Eye Is On the Sparrow" on the the 12-track CD A Woman Falling Out of Love.
A gifted singer, Eddie Franklin also has sung for years at gospel concerts in the Detroit area.
Eddie Franklin was a suspect in a fall 2002 fire at a $1.6 million suburrban Detroit mansion his mother used for storage, but an investigation by the Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox's Office later cleared him.
The home was known at the time to be severely underinsured. Lost in the fire were Grammy awards, dresses and other items Aretha Franklin had intended to donate to the Smithsonian Institution or other similar group.

I am so sorry to hear that. I am not familiar with Detroit-is the area where he was attacked a dangerous one? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Yes it is. I was just in that area last night! I'm from the eastside of Detroit and I try 2 avoid the westside whenever I can. I feel it's more dangerous but maybe cuz I grew up on the eastside and I'm more comfortable with the surroundings. There are people from the westside who think the opposite. Either way, Detroit is bad.

Thugs don't care who they hit in Detroit, do they?

They most likely did not know who he was "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Or didn't care to. He was just another intruder in their way.

Intruder?
Like don't come ovah heah on my turf?
Probably much more likely his clothes said "money."
Maybe he didn't voluntarily give up the wallet.
More will be revealed. Hope he recovers ok.

I think Ree-Ree had him at 15. He's her second-eldest son. Her first son, Clarence, was born when she was 13.

Dang! I lived a 5 minute walk from that area. Those were my area's main cross streets. I moved from there 10 years ago. Funny it didn't seem like a dangerous area. I moved because I didn't want to buy property in the city proper. But I bought my newborn daughter home in that house.
I guess things have really changed. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

See some how I will not be surprised to learn that Franklin knew his attackers. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

I actually made that post in jest. My only real familiarity with Greater Detroit is visiting my sister in Ypsilanti. Unfortunately, it seems I was onto something. But I hope I didn't offend you. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Damn fire musta burnt up everything 'cept her sleeveless dresses. Why, Lord, oh, whyyyyyy!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I knew about the fire but I didn't know Ree-Ree was intended to put certain items into the Smithsonian, that must've been a real blow.
Aretha hasn't had a good year anyways, she suffered a fall and broke some of her ribs, now one of her sons was brutally attacked.

Not at all. I am not originally from Detroit, and when I lived in that area, I was unafraid... but to be honest the last 3 months there, we had some weird experiences where these men walked in our house unannounced in broad daylight. My husband was home with our baby and he is unafraid, so he told them to get out... they claimed they had the wrong house. about 2 weeks later the same men showed up on our doorstep again. once again, my husband scared them off. But I thought... what if it was me home alone with our baby and those guys walked in. It was the middle of a warm summer day... the side door was open, and they just walked in. Pretty bold uhn?
I actually moved, and now moved again to near Ypsilanti... truthfully there is nowhere really safe anymore. You have to be aware, careful, and keep your doors locked at night. Sad but true. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack

Police Respond to Aretha Franklin's Complaints About Son's Assault September 24, 2010
Police are responding to Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin's complaints about the department's handling of the case involving an attack on her son.
"Our department has been in contact with the Franklin family and we are actively investigating this crime," said Detroit Police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. said a statement. "Whenever a citizen becomes a victim of violence, it not only affects their family, but the entire community."
On Thursday, Franklin issued a lengthy statement saying she wanted to set the record straight about the attack on her 52-year-old son Eddie Franklin Monday night in the area of Plymouth and Burt near a gas station.
Aretha Franklin blamed bad information from a woman she described as her "former publicist," Gwendolyn Quinn of Brooklyn, N.Y., and insinuations from the police for confusion about the alleged attack on Eddie Franklin. Aretha Franklin claimed police "gave the media the impression that my son was not being cooperative."
Police said they tried and failed to take a statement from Eddie Franklin in the hospital.
"After observing my son on Tuesday, it was clear that he was unable to communicate with anyone after such a traumatic attack and with his jaw wired," Aretha Franklin said. "The officer probably would not have been able to give a statement if he had been attacked by three men the very next day, either, and it was totally unreasonable to expect Eddie to do so as if he were not being cooperative."
