Any news articles? I think the headlines would have read "Singer Teddy Pendergrass and passanger in car accident" if someone was present in the vehicle. PRINCE: Always and Forever

Only JET seems to have those stories about Tanika (John) Watson.

Jet is the national inquirer for black people. Is Tanika still alive? "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Was someone from JET inside the car?? They know a little too much.

Yeah I've been reading some vintage articles and it's like "damn talk about feeding people tabloids!" I don't know if he's alive...I'll check.

Jet was NO joke back in the day, but I think they pounced on everything negative and not a lot of positive when it came to celebs "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Wow, i never thought of JET that way, but you're right!

I didn't watch "Unsung".
I remember very well when it was reported Pendergrass had been in a serious accident and it was reported the passenger in the car was a transvestite. This wasn't just Black media reporting this per say, in fact that's not where I heard the story from, it was TV reports. There was talk of people speaking to MS on the scene. Later on in the day when I was listening to Johnson's and Ebony/Jet owners radio station (Dj Tom Joyner) the talk was one of surprise and shock . . . lover-man, ladies man, ladies only concerts in a car with a transvestite? Did he know? As far as JET, they didn't go around spreading rumors nor innuendo they checked their facts and then reported.
Was it true, yes. Later on the powers that be downplayed and omitted who was in the car.

I mean I knew about the tranny part, but the other parts you mention... [Edited 9/15/10 8:53am] I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Im trying to save Teddy here and my only way to do that is to say that maybe he didn't know ol girl was a dude. Sometimes these dudes be doing it up better than some women do it's hard to tell. Maybe he was drunk. I can't see Teddy P, close the door turn off the lights running around with a tranny getting BJs. Maybe I just dont wanna believe it.
I'd doubt ol girl (dude) is still alive. This was 82 the beginning of the AIDS epidemic. If he survived that I'd be a miracle. Prince esta muerto...

I have an old Jet magazine i'm going to track down later with an article on Teddy. It would shock a lot of people. I'm a little sleepy now but i'm going to dig through some old mags later. Don't laugh at my funk

Lol. I always think the same thing when I here Teddy, or the mention of his name. "He used to scare the bitches into liking him."
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
this is what I remember, too. it was like there was a quick mention in the press, the main press, and then it specualtion quickly died out. i didn't read it in jet, though!

I had Teddy's biography, I loaned it out and can't find it now, so it's been years since I read it but if memory serves me he claimed the night of the accident he was high on coke and there was no mention of the tranny of course.

Interesting. Then again a police report said no drugs were discovered at the scene, then again he probably was high prior to getting in the car so who knows? But if he did say it, it makes even more sense that he crashed when he did. To say the car accident sobered Teddy up is an understatement if that's the case.

This was the tribute video I did for Teddy about a day (I think) after it was confirmed he had died.
I spent like two hours almost trying to perfect the picture timeline to the music lol

I only got thru like 2 minutes of it and had to turn it off. I'm emo this week so don't mind me. I love that song. Beautiful tribute hun. Prince esta muerto...

Thanks I know how tough it is. I was about near tears myself when I watched it the first time like "wow". It was almost as if someone else uploaded it.

Mem More ezz. Those were the times when music was soo soulful. Al Green was cool, but T.P. was HAWTT. When he smiled, he seemed to light up the room. As for some pipes, Teddy could send chills. I'm so glad I had the chance to see Teddy Pendergrass serveral times in concert. Lol, just about everyone in the audience had a stuffed teddy bear (guys too). Man oh man, T.P! Talk about never be another one like him, so far, none I've heard. Sad how tragic his life was changed by a really bad decision.

I found the mag. Do your links cover the Nov. 9, 1998 issue with Teddy in his wheelchair on the front. He came out with an autobiography around this time called Truly Blessed where he addresses several issues including his alternative sexuality and his alleged affair with Marvin Gaye's ex wife Jan. And that affair wasn't even long according to Teddy. It was after Janis filed for divorce from Marvin. He had to clear rumors that he stole Janis from Marvin.

Yep.
If my memory hasn't failed me.
Pendergrass car wreck was in March of 1982, the story in Jet about Pendergrass and Tenika Watson, was published a month later. Different time and day, the 24 news cycle didn't exist and for the most part mainstream media loathed reporting on entertainment news and for the most part they didn't, just in passing.
To each his own, he knew, and that what he was into, his business.
