Eminem set to open Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards on sprawling white stage

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Eminem is not afraid to open the MTV Video Music Awards.

MTV general manager Stephen Friedman said Wednesday that the rapper, who's nominated for eight trophies and continues to sit atop sales charts with "Recovery," will open Sunday's ceremony at the Nokia Theatre, which has been transformed with a sprawling white set reminiscent of the out-of-this-world Theme Building at the Los Angeles International Airport.

"We thought that there's no better way to kick off the show than a performance from Eminem," said Friedman.

The enveloping stage design includes a giant rotating billboard, curvy catwalk, circular performance space and two massive video screens that will serve as curtains. VMA executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic said the undulating space, created by German designer Florian Wieder, required about 2,000 orchestra seats to be removed from the Nokia Theatre.

"Every year, we try to have a theme and purpose beyond just giving awards away," said Ignjatovic. "This year, being back in Los Angeles, we really gravitated toward mid-century modern architecture and the pop culture of the '50s, like the youth-oriented rebellion films 'Rebel Without a Cause' and 'Wild Ones.' It's a very L.A. kind of a set."

As always this show will be about, Who looks the most unusual, who does the most bizarre thing, who makes the biggest ass of themselves. For me i just check out the ladies on the Red Carpet to see who looks HOT, the show is useless musically, and the videos are not relevant.

I used to be like you. The first time I watched it was like when I was two. I was addicted to the show up until 2002. Then 2003 was worse. After 2004, I was more like "fuck this show". lol

You know, come to think about it, there were a couple years where I started watching the show and then lost interest and didnt finish watching it... those years when the show was in Miami and whatnot. Those shows sucked big time. I watched last years a couple times. The MJ TRIBUTE made it must see tv. The 90s were the best VMAs, great diversity of great artists year after year then.

Hell no. She is everywhere and has been for what seems like years now. And Beyonce has to take a break now surely.

Music videos died with Michael Jackson. Well OK, maybe not quite, but they might as well of done.

The thing is, she is boring already, the media and industry dont get this, we get bombarded with 2-3 artists 24/7 nonstop, no wonder there are "hate" threads for artists today, they need to learn to spread the marketing dollars and explore shit again, MTV is not relevant and hasnt been, this show is all about what will happen and who will do the "buzz" thing that gets the soundbyte, MTV is a scam and a shell of what it once wassss, i cant compare an award show that at one time, had Tina Turner Hall and Oates, Pat Benatar, and great bands like Inxs and REM and U2 and others like Lionel and Michael, and now being a channel that promotes Snooki and Heidi and Spencer 24/7

Very true. I hate this. No diversity. I really hope Gaga is playing her diehard fans like chumps and just dissapears for a few years and kills off Lady Gaga. Maybe she will ala Ziggy Stardust. All her singles (can't comment on the albums) sound vacuous, empty and souless to me. That's fine if you like that, but it's getting tired now.

I also hate how everyone appears on everyone else's tracks. Like Beyonce just had to hook up twice with Lady Gaga. And Eminem with Rihanna? They are not genuine collaborations, just desperation by artists and record labels because they have run out of ideas to keep kids and teenagers entertained (as kids have very short attension spans for pop music these days as they get their music for "free" or just download individual songs (thank you Apple) with little to no regard for the artist they are downloading). According to record companies, artist must stay in the public eye at all times, so that means pointless collabs. It's sad and overkill.

yeah, dont get me started on the whole "scene" but basically its just pure laziness and lack of imagination in marketing that led to this, i mean i understand on capitalizing on what sells that has always been done, HOWEVER there used to be choice, and even though there is tons of music out there, about 12 are heard of and jammed down your throat and alot of others are in the mold of what you hear already, so like i said, i'll check out that red carpet for the ladies, i know thats shallow, but hey so is MTV. The only way id tune into the show is if a-ha was going on to do a 25th anniversary of their first mtv appearance and were getting a pioneers award, since they did actually "break ground" with that video and maybe MTV if they claim to be about videos, actually looked at their history they would acknowledge it, i mean they only won all the awards that year. though im sure Kayne would run on stage and try to take it away this year

Resurrect Friday Night Videos!

Nah, music videos aren't anything special (at least to me) anymore. Now, if they brought back USA UP ALL NIGHT, i'd be game for that! lol

I'll be missing the VMA's (intentionally). But, I'm sure i'll hear about who acted like an idiot, who kissed who, and wtf was he/she wearing on monday morning.

I remember I used to feel like I had to see the VMA's back in the 90s, but I stopped watching after 2001. And I only watched last year because Janet was doing a tribute to Michael. Honestly, the show is irrelevant. The music they feature is irrelevant. The performances are boring... except for Gaga - she did a decent performance last year. Everything else was lame. I haven't even kept up with music videos anymore... who the hell was even nominated?! And I don't really care much for this Chelsea host either. I liked it back in the day when Chris Rock was hosting.

As for Beyonce... girl needs to take a break. It would do good for her career to disappear for now... or longer.

Then I hope she shaves her head and does something new. The long blonde hair and heels are getting old. OR.. she can actually focus on the music and her artistic skills. Convince us that she's a serious artist.

I don't really care if she takes a break or not because it seems she never will lol I have a serious love/hate with that girl I like some of her songs but she annoys me . And over waiting for people to convince me that they are a serious artist I just move on to the next artist if they don't hold my attention lol.

I know what you mean. I have a love/hate thing with Mariah, but she can at least deliver in music and has "interesting" moments every now and then, lol. Beyonce never really held my attention in music or in celebrity status. I think it's because I always know what to expect.

The thing that surprises, maybe even impresses me most about Beyonce at this point is that she has managed to remain not only in the public eye, but a HUGE star for more than a decade (Destiny's Child 'No, No, No' was 1998). It's almost impossible to stay on top that long without working through some sort of major backlash. But not for Beyonce, she just keeps beating you over the head until you submit. lol She didn't break ANY of the same ground, imo, but she's getting close to reaching Madonna levels of recognition. Little kids know who she is, old people know who she is, everybody in between definitely knows who she is. Can she stay in peoples consciosness for the next 10-15 years without making them hate her? That remains to be seen. But she's clearly trying.
