KANYE just made a big deal about it last week.

I never left Team Kanye - but a bit of humility and gratitude is good for anybody. I hope is new album is huge.
I am not a Taylor Swift fan and she is definitely not Joni Mitchell. However, she does actually write all her own songs. Something that's almost unheard of for an artist of ANY age in her genre of music, let alone someone as young as she is. Country music is a factory, with teams of people writing most of it's biggest hits. She could probably stop singing (something I wouldn't hate) and make more money writing songs for other country artists. |

Ke$ha's "Tik Tok" and Katy Perry's "California Gurls" sound like the same song to me. I thought Taylor's song to Kanye was kinda sweet. Kanye seems to be working awfully hard to be receiving such a minimal response (IMO), though my heart is starting to soften for him just a tad bit (ala Chris Brown after his tear-fest). Usher performed well, though he seems to be trying very hard to fill Mike's shoes (...I can see him and Ne-Yo getting into a slap-fight over who takes THAT crown).
But as many have mentioned, this years VMA's seemed to lack much of the excitement of previous years. Perhaps that will change in the coming years as all this new talent matures and develops their craft.
It was nice seeing Cher. "There's Nothing That The Proper Attitude Won't Render Funkable!"

Deadmau5 tweeted a bit during the show. Here's a picture of what he was doing ten minutes before the show started in order to kill some time.

The music Gaga has released so far has been above par considering what else is on and her contemporaries, but she really shouldn't speak. Every time she opens her mouth I like her less and less.
The show so far is not amusing nor charming nor cutting edge or anything else good.
It's par for the course but this is really is an ugly no class show, I mean more than usual. For a VMA, that says a lot.

I hate when people try to use that as some sort of an achievement along with the age excuse. What difference does it make if all the material you produce is basic? All her shit is about either fairytales, horses, rainbows etc. And the new ode to Kanye tonight had word 'lunchbox' in it. I mean come on, anyone can write a song. The question is if the substance is there. |

Funny I read this right as Mary started singing, which instantly takes the class level up a couple notches.
I think their stage, lighting rig and video screens are insanely cool. I love Deadmau5, so of course I love his cube and the small bits they've shown of him DJing. But the rest of the show so far, the "talent", I totally agree with you. And I actually like Ursher, but I don't dig that OMG song at all.
I hate Lady Gargoyle's forcefed to the masses crap ass music. I absolutely despise it. It's awful. |

Well clearly you're more of a Taylor Swift expert than I am. However, since my Sister, Niece and Mother all listen to her music I can assure you that's not what it's about. And no, not just anyone can write a song. I totally disagree with you there. Maybe they can put some words on a piece of paper. But to put words to music with a melody that people actually want to hear over and over and over? Nah, it's really not that easy. To have done it as many times as she has is a skill. And you kind of avoided my point. Country music, her genre, is actually AGAINST what she is. I don't like her music, but I do have respect for her finding success on her own terms at such a young age. It's very difficult to do in country music, where the biggest talent is usually middle aged men or women who've had all their songs written for them. |

I agree the technical and artistic side behind the scenes and the dj are extremely well done. That goes for MTV's graphics as well. But the human side, the featured performers and writing is really bad. Again for an VMA the standards are pretty low, but how low can you go? |

I wonder if Linkin Park was taped ahead of time? Why else would they have one of the biggest selling bands of the last decade perform off-site? Weird. Anybody in LA? Was Linkin Park at Griffith Observatory tonight?
Don't understand why Bieber was outside, either. Spent truckloads of money for the indoor stage/production, why not use it? |
