Another flamboyant Gay themed group that were massive in Britain between 1970 and 1973

Yet only Get It on, made the Top 20 in America.

They had Number Ones with Hot Love, Get It On Bang a gong, Telegram Sam, and Number twos with Ride a white swan, Jeepster, Solid Gold Easy Action, 20th century Boy and Children of the Revolution

The Groover, We like to boogie were also huge hits. All their albums hit big with Electric Warrior going to #1, Slider to #2 and 1973's Tanx even got to #4.

They were the first Big glam group and had hysteria like Fandom in Britain amongst girls under 18. Yet despite this image, their music was really good, very catchy, poppy but esoteric pop songs. Marc Bolan the leader was killed in a car crash in September 1977 just a few days short of his 30th Birthday. He was also Jewish and apparently Bisexual (Born as Marc Feld in 1947), and came to fame in a group called Tyrannosaurus Rex who wrote acoustic hippie sounding songs that were minor hits, but in 1970 went electric and took just one member Micky Finn and changed the name to T Rex and released Ride a White Swan in November 1970, the rest is history.

So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

T-Rex is my all time favourite band. I love everything Marc ever released and pretty much all the bootlegs and unreleased songs too. In 1971-72 they were bigger than the Beatles (according to John and Ringo), but only in the UK. After the "T-Rextacy" years Marc kept on making great soul, funk, punk and new wave influenced music. Btw Tainted Love songwriter Gloria Jones has a son with Marc (his only child) named Rolan Bolan.

Here's a gem from the 1977 album Dandy in the Underworld:

"Life's an elevator, it goes up and down. Life's an elevator can't you dig the sound?" -Marc Bolan

Just picked up Tanx and I'm quite enjoying it! "Electric Slim and the Factory Hen" is incredible!

Yeah, that's a brilliant track and Tanx is a great diverse album, I own three different versions of it boxed . There are couple of throw away songs like Shock Rock, but Broken-Hearted Blues, Tenement Lady and Life Is Strange are among the most soulful and intimate songs he ever released.

My favorite T Rex song. Isn't Lady Stardust (by Bowie) about Bolan?

"Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

Yes, at least according to Bolan: The Rise and Fall of the 20th Century Superstar by Mark Peytress, but I don't think Bowie has ever confirmed it. To me, the lyrics of Lady Stardust definately sound like they could be about Bolan.
