A good question to ask is, will her music stand against the test of time? I love the music created by the 80s legends still sounds fresh and relevant today... can her music do that? I'm already sick of Poker Face, Alejandro, Bad Romance, etc. I think she should focus more on melody and the quality of music rather than current catchy tunes. She definitely has her own "dance sound" going on and it's interesting, but there's needs to be more substance for her to stick like glue to industry.

Well, she seems to write from the perspective of a storyteller, but not simple stories like "this happened and then that happened" but stories that can be interpreted many different ways.

Most dance tracks don't feature lyrics that make the listener listen in carefully or listen again - it's usually all about the beat and maybe something catchy that works ad infinitum. I think Crystal Waters' "She's Homeless" is the perfect example of how to engage a listener even at 120 bpm.

And Gaga's songs don't only depend on being dance tracks to work. How many people have already covered "Poker Face"?

nod There have been a few times where I've watched her perform on her piano and the first person to pop into my head was: Liberace. Don't ask me why because she's really no where near as talented a pianist as Liberace was. Wow, that man could dress his ass off and his stage entrances were quite fantastic. The Gaga is good, but copies are never better than the originals no matter how good the copy is.

nod Agreed. When Lady Gaga learns how to play all of these below instuments:

Guitar
electric guitar
acoustic guitar

Bass Guitar
electric bass
acoustic bass

Keys
Piano
Clavinet
ClaviChord
Rhodes
Wurlitzer
Harpschord

ORGANS
Farfisa
Hammond B3
Vox Continental

Drums
Acoustic Drums
Electric Drum Pads

Synthesizer
Moog
Yamaha DX-7
ARP
Oberheim OB-Xa

Percussion
Congas
Bongos
woodblocks
claves
(more) cowbell
vibraphone
vibraslap
tambourine
shakers
triagle

Wind Instrument
Harmonica

And writes, produces, composes more than an one album's worth of songs, than we can re-visit this discussion with a clear and sane mind. Honestly, most of her songs really aren't any better than the rushed and thrown together material that Prince gave to WB when he was trying to get out of his contract with them, but that's just my opinion. Lady Gaga on her best day doesn't compare to Prince on his worst for me, again just my opinion. I'm not saying the woman isn't talented because I think she is very talented, clever, and a great live performer, but to say she is a lot like Prince is quite a stretch to me. Unlike Prince, I was bored with the Lady Gaga image after the 'Paparazzi' video...I do love the bubble dress though mushy . If Madonna had majored in music rather than dance, she'd have been Lady Gaga back in the 80s, so let's just stick with the Lady Gaga-Madonna comparisons. Lady Gaga is a very talented artist who is greatly influenced by Prince...there, that's better. biggrin

I wonder how long it will be before someone posts a picture that inspired this idea.

Apparently, the "meat bikini" has been around for some time.

Let's see: the 'generic middle-age laughing white ladies wearing stuff they just grabbed off a rack without looking' thread is somewhere over there ... oh, well whadyaknow - I can't seem to find one.

Number of threads mentioning Lady Gaga? 578.

"Vision of Love"

"Love Takes Time"

"Someday"
"I Don't Wanna Cry"

You sure about that? lol

[Edited 9/1/10 2:26am]

I am coming late to this discussion but this has to be corrected

1) Mariah Carey wasn't the first to have 4#1s from a debut, Paula Abdul did the same one year before with her debut (Straight Up, Forever Your Girl, Coldhearted, Opposites Attract all reached #1)

2) Lady Gaga does not have 4#1s in the US until now, she has two (Just Dance, Poker Face) none of her other singles went to #1

3) In case you are talking about the UK, yes she has 4#1s there but two of them (Bad Romance, Telephone) came from the re-release and there are loads of other artists who had 4#1s from a debut there including Westlife and the Spice Girls who did it without a re-release also.

As for the actual question, I too think that Gaga is much closer to Madonna than Prince. That said, I do expect to see growth from her pretty soon as some of her performances (Speechless) have shown great potential.

Paula had two songs prior to "Straight Up" that didn't go #1. I think when I mentioned Mariah, I'm mentioning an artist whose FIRST FOUR songs off her debut went #1. It took Paula song #3 to get #1 and then she was on her way. But I guess I didn't quite understand the meaning of "first" lol

Yeah that's a record, I was just answering to the person who said that Gaga is the first artist to have 4 #1s from a debut when she doesn't even have 4#1s alltogether. I thought you were answering on that point too

Yes, songwriting. At this stage in her career (the first album), Madonna was not an impressive writer by any means.

It will be interesting to see where Gaga goes from here.

You mean "Like A Virgin"... well I disagree. All Madonna singles from the first 2 albums (except maybe "Material Girl") are far better than anything Gaga released so far. But I agree that Gaga's trip is promising to be very interesting indeed
