I agree. There will never be another Madonna, just like there will never be another Prince or Michael Jackson. If Lady Gaga is gonna have a long-lasting career like those artists did, she's gonna have to develop her own musical identity and persona.I think the 80s was the last decade where we had truly unique and original artists.

But doesn't every artist have major influences?

Madonna: Debbie Harry, Marilyn Monroe, Nancy Sinatra ...

Prince: James Brown, Ike Turner, Stevie Wonder, Sly & The Family Stone, The Isley Brothers ...

Michael Jackson: James Brown, Frankie Lymon, Jackie Wilson, Sammy Davis, Jr. ...

Influences, yes. But the artists you listed above - Madonna, Prince, Michael - also went beyond the artists they were influenced by and contributed to the game. That's what made them unique and original. They didn't stop at imitation, they went beyond it and added to the musical landscape. That's what a real artist or a potential legend is all about.

"If you enter this world knowing you are loved and you leave this world knowing the same, then everything that happens in between can be dealt with" - Michael Jackson

It is kinda uncanny how much Gaga looks and sounds just like Madonna back in the 90s in it.

I'll trade you one parody for another:

When she transitions into La Isla Bonita lol lol lol

She's the only artist to have 4 number 1 singles off a debut album, ever! Just sayin~

Say what you want - omg wat a freek wearin sum fkn kermit da frog coat n shit eugh shez so0o0o commercial n p0pular i h8 her she is ripping of [insert slut here] -

the woman knows how to write a catchy tune, and a song with a good structure. She knows what She is good at her craft, and that's what its all about! Besides, I think she's fun and works hard at what she does.

People who have been on tour with her say shes constantly writing songs, singing, thinking of ideas for her shows and outfits and things like that. She spends all her money on her concerts so she's not even that rich. I like her very much biggrin

Can't really see much of P in her, except their both a bit weird and live in their own worlds. Her attitude and style reminds me of Madonna back in the early 1990s when M was at her peak and on a mission to shake up the world although M had a sense of humour about it all.

She's by far the most exciting and interesting 'pop star' out there at the moment. I't will be interesting to see if she'll be able to re-invent herself as well as M has for the past 27 years.

She may have shown her hand too soon.

[Edited 8/31/10 12:13pm]

The her whole "I'm so different and acting weird" is a facade for attention..3 Years ago she's wearing jeans, then she realized that dressing/acting very different would give her attention..She's a more style over substance artist..just like the rest..

So, on their way to becoming the legends they became, they didn't spend any time imitating any of their influences? No, they didn't stop at imitation - you know what, the word 'imitation' sounds like an indictment. Let's loosen it up; they became who they became because of the shoulders they stood upon and, sometimes, even admitted their influences out loud in homage. And sometimes, that looked like nothing but imitation.

She's just getting started but even her biggest influence, Madonna, recognizes - she wouldn't have done that SNL skit with her if she didn't.

Exactly. It's one thing to be "influenced" by artists that came before you,but you gotta add your own thing to it.From what I've seen and heard so far,Lady Gaga is just recycling what was already done. She's "borrowing" from Grace Jones,Madonna,Dale Bozzio and many others.Young folks think they're seeing something new and unique, but those of us who lived through the 80s,know better lol

I've heard people repeating that about Gaga, too - and it's not true. Mariah did it with her first four singles and, even though they were from three different albums, The Jackson Five took their first four singles to the top of Billboard's Hot 100 and were the first to do that.

Which really only says so much. Aretha is still Aretha without having done any of that. Mariah's debut album struggled outside of North America. And lots of us still love "Just Another Sucker" and For You just as they are ...

I finally heard a song from her about a month ago. I got bored as hell one Friday night and went down to the white gay club (the first time I've been out since 2006 and it will probably be the last time I go out). They were playing all that trance type shit as usual and when one song came on, all the young queens rushed to the dance floor yelling "Oooooh, Lady Gaga!". Hell, it didn't sound any different to me than those other generic trance type songs they were playing. I never would have known it was her if I hadn't heard those young queens hollering her name.

True, she does that - but she also does this, debuting a new song at San Diego's House of Blues:

Some people are going to sleep on her - I know I did. I'm glad I know better now.

I think Gaga is Madonna 2.0. New, definitely improved, but we all know EXACTLY where she came from. Without the original version, she wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

Understood. Raw, sexy, taut, slinky, muscular funk is definitely something I haven't seen her do yet ... come to think of it, even Prince doesn't do much of that anymore. (Who does?) I miss horny music, too ...

Yes, but the song I heard sounded very generic like all the other music I've heard that is considered "dance" these days.

I'm not talking about just her fashion, but the way she tries to portray herself..Her whole pretentious way of saying things just doesn't sit well with me because I don't think she truly means it..I'm not going to talk about her music quality because that another dicussion..but the whole "My little monsters, because of you I am so brave" just annoys the hell out of me lol

There is no natural evolution from her, I'm not the only one who feels that she just tries to hard to be different rather than focus on the musical side...but then again, that's her gimmick she plays into, and frankly, without it, she would be nowhere as popular based on solely her music IMO. I really don't know where she will end up because so much of her image ATM is based on an extreme so if she tries to change it, her career might just get f'ed up in the process.

Now, before vainandy & I fuck in front of all you lovely folks ...

(C'mon baby ky put that away and save it for later lol )

It's funny: last weekend, I went to a house party - basically all middle-aged Black gay men - and the host was playing the same kind of music you described. I'm a house DJ from back when house was house and someone kept asking me to ask the host to change the music - like it was my party! I was about to, though, because nobody was dancing AT ALL.

Gaga does some of the same kind of dance music, but I like the songs that lurk within. It's her live performances that have kicked me over the line into fandom. I didn't know what any of her songs sound like until last week. I wonder what it would take to hear some funk from her. She sounds like she has the chops to be able to hang. The sad thing is that I don't think she'd risk alienating her white gay male fanbase to find out ...

We've got a lot in common. I DJ'd for a few months in a black gay club as a favor to a friend back in the mid 1990s. I've been mixing for years but never professionally, only for personal enjoyment because I love it so much.

lol I feel you ... I'm not sure what to think about that either, but she comes across as a genuine person who really does love her fans. I also think she's entitled to her schtick; she's a young woman starting out in an industry prepared to eat her alive.

There is no natural evolution from her, I'm not the only one who feels that she just tries to hard to be different rather than focus on the musical side...but then again, that's her gimmick she plays into, and frankly, without it, she would be nowhere as popular based on solely her music IMO. Evolution takes time.

I don't think we'll be seeing any "Lady Gaga: Unplugged" anytime soon - even though she has the talent to pull it off. Give it a few years. She hasn't even released a DVD of either her videos or her tours yet. She comes from musical theater, so I predict she'll be playing with the entire sight & sound experience for some time to come. She seems focused on her career, but confident about doing it her way - not being paranoid about making people like her just to sell a record. She's having fun and it's fun to watch. She's already taken over.
