Yes, Lady Gaga IS a lot like Prince.

Not only is she as prolific a writer right now as Prince used to be, she's at least as clever. A song at 120bpm might be hot in the club (with what at first glance seems to be superficial lyrical depth) reveals itself as raw gut-wrenching emotion when it's just her on the piano performing it live.

Best example I've found of this is her performance of "Just Dance" at designer Marc Jacobs' afterparty:

No, I'm not saying she sounds like Prince or is better than Prince or replaces Prince. I'll always love him. What I am saying is that I see some of that coy prolificness that I saw in him in her.

Oh, something else? They both wield control. (Haus of Gaga? Paisley Park?) I think she told Oprah that there was no part of her career that she's not involved in. It's something we saw Prince gradually ease his way into, but damn - she's already like that and still in her early 20s?

(Gaga, if you're listening, what applies to your father also applies to you. Take care of yourself. Do you really think he wants to go through hearing about his daughter passing out and dying on stage? That crap is only poignant in documentaries. Eat. Sleep.)

Oh - just sayin ...

Shonuff ... and Grace Jones and Cyndi Lauper and Lady Miss Kier and Debbie Harry and Siouxsie and Ultra Naté ... and of course Madonna, but she's only one of her more obvious influences. (And "Alejandro" makes the obvious even more blatant.)

(That SNL skit was hilarious! "Guess what Madonna? I'm totally hotter than you!" lol )

But, honestly, Madge can't hang as far as vocals, musicianship and songwriting - and I'm a fan of hers, too ... and this is just the beginning of Gaga's career. She has her influences - all artists do - but she salutes them while adding her own swerve to the mix. And what a swerve it is!

I'm with ya UptownCitizen. There totally is Prince in Gaga.

Folk will come in here and puke and go crazy and dispute and not be able to handle it, as they have on countless threads comparing the two....but it's there.wink

Okay, let me put it another way: Prince may still be a prolific writer, but he damn sure isn't letting many of us know about it. And the little bit he lets us know about doesn't resonate.

Just guessing but I think the point was even if Gaga writes as frequently as Prince once did, her output doesn't come close.

I love some of Gaga's stuff but she's more like Madonna than Prince.

And she borrows from alot of other artists as well, many of them have been mentioned already.

Dale Bozzio of Missing Persons is another one.

Has Prince ever milked an album the way the that Gaga is doing with her debut?

It seems like she is afraid of her 2nd album.

Can't really see much of P in her, except their both a bit weird and live in their own worlds. Her attitude and style reminds me of Madonna back in the early 1990s when M was at her peak and on a mission to shake up the world although M had a sense of humour about it all.

She's by far the most exciting and interesting 'pop star' out there at the moment. I't will be interesting to see if she'll be able to re-invent herself as well as M has for the past 27 years.

She may have shown her hand too soon.

There's no doubt Gaga has been influenced by Madge though.

The her whole "I'm so different and acting weird" is a facade for attention..3 Years ago she's wearing jeans, then she realized that dressing/acting very different would give her attention..She's a more style over substance artist..just like the rest..

Doesn't Prince also wear that hat in the SOTT video performance of Forever In My Life? And a modified version of it in My Name Is Prince?

I would compare her more to Madonna, actually. The difference between GaGa and Prince/Madonna is that GaGa's fashion is all over the map - not consistent throughout one album or even one entire video. Madonna and Prince would adopt a "look" and ride it out for an entire album until the next one came out - and, with Prince, it was a new look almost every single year.

I think so. I terms Madonna always reinventing herself, back in the day. Now, Madge is just an old hag, riding on the coattails of her former self. You could not get me to see or buy anything recent by Madonna, now. However, I do often listen to Ms. Gaga.

I'm a fan of Madonna's also, but she can't go to center stage alone, sit at a piano and deliver a song the way Lady Gaga can. And Madonna is still Madonna - she hasn't left the game yet. They're two different people at two different places in their lives and careers. Compare them, sure, but I also think it's possible to like one without trashing the other. Or :gasp: to even like both.

Um, 1999? And she also has basically been touring non-stop since she dropped her debut album. And dropped another album, releasing four singles from it - with videos.

And has already supposedly finished her third album while on the road.

That's true; I showed those two pictures side to side because of the similar hat worn a similar way and the lesbionics.

Prince became his look eventually after a couple of albums. In the beginning, he was just that doe-eyed, multi-instrumentalist teenager with no look.

I agree. There will never be another Madonna, just like there will never be another Prince or Michael Jackson. If Lady Gaga is gonna have a long-lasting career like those artists did, she's gonna have to develop her own musical identity and persona.I think the 80s was the last decade where we had truly unique and original artists.

YEP nod there's no chance in hell that GaGa could deliver an album like Overpowered or Ruby Blue, no chance in hell; I like both artists, but I mean, it's like comparing Led Zeppelin and ZZ Top, you can clearly see who's gonna win and who's gonna lose...

But doesn't every artist have major influences?

Madonna: Debbie Harry, Marilyn Monroe, Nancy Sinatra ...

Prince: James Brown, Ike Turner, Stevie Wonder, Sly & The Family Stone, The Isley Brothers ...

Michael Jackson: James Brown, Frankie Lymon, Jackie Wilson, Sammy Davis, Jr. ...

Ok.. good artist? Nope. "Clever"? Absolutely. She knows how to market herself and has made a sound for herself. At the end of the day, when it comes to being a pop sensation, she got it.

About her having a little bit of Prince in her? Sure. But ultimately, Gaga has a little bit of all major 80s artist in her. Why? Because that's the theme she wants to roll with. She's got Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, etc all in her. She knows these folks were the biggest sensations and you see remanants of each of them in her style and music. I would say that she demonstrates Madonna to a greater degree, however. Michael and Prince have a quite a distance from Gaga as far as being musical geniuses go. Undisputable.

In my opinion, an artist can only have qualities of a legend when that artist opens doors and breaks barriers into something new. There ain't nothing new about hair puffs and leotards, Gaga. Love the catchy tunes, though smile
