To me, Coldplay is coffee table music- music that people who aren't really fans of music will uphold as something special to appear as if they like something contemporary but substantial while not really knowing what they're talking about. I really have a hard time envisioning anyone really being passionate about them- it's just so bland! lol

Well, there are certainly a lot of albums from the 2000s that I love from veteran artists, but I adore each of these artists that have emerged from the 2000s:

Annie

LCD Soundsystem

The Strokes

Gorillaz

Chromeo

!!!

Janelle Monae

Bat for Lashes

Yeah Yeah Yeahs

RES

Peaches

Duffy

Madvillain

Death from Above 1979

Interpol

Justice

Ladyhawke

The xx

Wolf Parade

Antony and the Johnsons

And don't get me started on how bad Coldplay is, Tyler! lol

lol Coldplay, with their 5 CLASSIC singles of the 00s (we all know which ones), easily murder those artists/bands, minus Duffy, who is certainly my nº11 (love) and, perhaps, Gorillaz...

The Strokes are the worst abomination of all time, even worse than O'Town...

eek i love the strokes...... eek ...thought their first album was superb stuff... eek ....just shows you...

A personal observation...

The percentage of my music collection from the 70s has always been rather small and only recently (partly in anticipation of this thread) have I been stocking up on catalog albums from that decade--mostly ones that were the best reviewed by both critics and fans alike since, what better place to start, right? Having finally listened to them all and subsequently ranking them, I came to one conclusion:

I have a very boring list.

I heard some great albums for the very first time sure, but my list is for the most part devoid of any personal taste. Compared to my 80s and 90s lists which I felt had my own individual stamp, my 70s list is compiled of all the usual suspects and looks a lot like everyone else's list, just with the albums in a slightly different order. Yawn.

So here's my tentative top 80 albums list, if anyone really cares. lol Ian, it's not final until I email you the excel file before the deadline.

I'm in the same boat, to a large degree. Although I know and enjoy a good amount of 70s albums now (but not nearly as many as I know for the 80s and 2000s), most of it consists of critical darlings and commercial juggernauts. I think it has to do with the fact that I wasn't around during the 70s, so I looked at charts and critics' lists to explore. There are a few oddities in my list, but nowhere near as many as I would have for those other decades.

I think to a large part this is due to the fact that the independent/underground elements weren't fully developed throughout most of the seventies. It existed certainly, but my impression is that there just weren't as many nooks & crannies where weird outliers like to settle.

The Strokes killed rock n' roll. Period; the genre briefly enjoyed an uncertain resurrection with FFerdinand's first LP and Arctic Monkey's debut...

On top of that, The Strokes were always loved by the two magazines that are clearly killing rock n' roll with their unbearable bullshit: Pitchford (or Pitchfork or whatever that shit t's called) and that perpetual, ridiculous & unfocused zombie called Rolling Stone...so FUCK THEM...

Hmmph...I think an objective third party would probably find your list, with your Serge Gainsbourgs & Dusty Springfields, far more hip than mine.

I am genuinely surprised to see Led Zeppelin on your list. I would have thought they might be a little too ‘traditional cock rock’ for your tastes. Bob Plant did sing like a girl sometimes, though.

I mentioned Enya before cuz Moobmean dissed Coldplay as band that could be considered as the equivalent of an alt-rock/indie "new age" band: bland and inoffensive; that's why I said that I still prefer Enya or ANY other New Age act than the bullshit of the 00s alternative bands lol But yeah, I do believe that Enya's 00s albums are good enough, at least for the new age genre; of course, her prime were the 88-96 years, after that her material is only for the hardcore, really...

And Coldplay are one of the BEST bands of the 00s, with 5 CLASSIC singles in the can...and the album X&Y is one of the best of the 00s...cool

Ah yes, I honestly only heard those two Zeppelin albums for the first time in the last two weeks which I had bought as a promise to an orger Zeppelin fam that shall remain nameless. Loved Zepplein III exactly because it wasn't so 'cock rock' as you put it. I'm also a big fan of Jack White so liking that album in particular seems natural to me in retrospect. I probably should have rated it even higher than I did.

Another batch of new 70s albums arrived in the mail over the weekend so my list will no doubt be revised before the deadline.

The first 70s R&B person I'd recommend whom I didn't see on your list is Betty Davis. That woman is FUNKY. If you like Prince and Parliament then she's a no-brainer. And all her albums were remastered very nicely last year. nod
