Is getting these really necessary for anyone that has bought the box sets?

I bought the box set after I bought those two.

It was because of the blue album I had to go back and buy the whole box set and their video anthology.

Same here. These compilations are a great way to get to know their music and their different 'eras'. The '1' album was to patchy for me. I don't think I would have had the same reaction to their music if I had just bought their albums in order, as I only really love 'Help!' through to 'Magical Mystery Tour' and on a good day 'The White Album'. The early ones don't appeal, and their last truly great album was 'Abbey Road' not 'Let It Be' imo.

The Anthology films are great too if you're new to them. I don't listen to the Anthology albums often though, not that big a fan, I guess.
