Discovering Deborah Cox

I have to admit - other than a remix of "Nobody's Supposed to Be Here", and "Mr. Lonely", I really don't know anything about Deborah Cox. I don't really know what I even assumed about her. Not sure if I thought she was just another RnB pretender to the throne, or was a circuit queen of sorts (meaning she did all dance music). I just never listened to her, but knew about her presence.

However, of late, I've had some random interest in her, and decided to at least give her music a listen. WELL HOLY SNOOKIES! Her first album alone is spectacular. Amazing that after 15 years in the business, her four albums have only garnered 3.5 hours of music. Of course that's no small task, but it seems like she should have a lot more. I have Deborah Cox, One Wish, The Morning After, and The Promise cued up. I'm already into the first album as I type.

Anything else from her you'd recommend? Your thoughts on her?

I think she is the most underrated singer in R&B but where the

hell would she fit in today's market. She would definitely have

to go the AC Urban format today. I have all her four of her cd's.

She also did a album of Dinah Washington standards which i

didn't purchase. You're correct the first album is spectacular

as well as the rest of them. The Promise doesn't quite live up

to the first three but is still good nevertheless.

Hex Hector put his foot down in her music. I don't think I ever heard a mix he did for her that I disliked.

I like most of his mixes too. I like the mix of "Someone To Call My Lover" that he did for Janet.

^^ JUST listened to "Things Just Ain't The Same". I'm listening to her four CDs in chronological order. I'm on "It's Over Now" on the 2nd album. I'm attempting a download of the aforementioned Dinah Washington tribute album.

I love most of the remixes on the Whitney set, too. Sometimes, the remixes were 100x better than the original, and certainly breathed new life into an otherwise okay song. That happened for Toni's "Un-break my Heart", as well as Deborah's "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here". Hell, even "Missing" by Everything But The Girl was a fail of a hit until it was remixed and re-released.

When Toni performed on one of the morning shows a few years ago, she used the remix of "Un-Break", instead of the album version. I def wasn't a fan of "Heartbreak Hotel" and "It's Not Right But It's Okay" until I heard remixes, then I went nuts over them, especially the latter. Even Madonna has ended up using remixes in concert, like "Express Yourself", "Like A Prayer", "Fever", "Erotica", etc.

The 2nd CD from Whitney's GH is wild as the day is long. It really took me by surprise, and at the same time, it made me feel sad that she didn't dabble so much with the club scene.

As for Ms.Cox, I like her but she came in an unfair time, back in the 90s, female R&B singers had to be billed as either a Mariah/Whitney or a Mary J knock-off, you can't be neither, and unfortunately, she had to cater to these mind games in order to enjoy a career. To be honest though, these days she could take a ballad like those ladies mentioned combined and then some.

She a good actress too.

^^^ Starting that album tomorrow. I listened to the first two. LOVE her stuff. I just can't believe I went this long and never clicked into her music. I should have the Destination: Moon album when I wake up in the morning, too.

I think that's why her record company pushed two uptempo singles

to start off her debut album.

Deborah Cox is the Real Deal baby, i saw her LIVE when she first released her debut CD in Nasty Nati Ohio...She BLEW my socks off and from there i've been a fan ever since. It BEEHOOVES me why this talented lady is'nt as highly regarded as other premier vocalist....Oppss do they even say that anymore? LOL I just know she brings it LIVE and if she came in concert here NOW i would be front row center. So since you've discovered D Cox man enjoy this talented singer because she so deserves it. A WINNER IN MY BOOK!!!

A talented singer that her labels didn't know what to do with. I remembered when I first heard "Sentimental". Blew my mind at the time.

Keep in mind that Deborah Cox was once signed to Clive Davis' Arista Records. And like most of the women that Clive got close to on a professional level, he was still looking for Whitney Houston mkII. But just like the case of the late Phyllis Hyman, Deborah Cox is too soulful for the pop OR the adult contemporary charts.

Judging by the remix of Noboby Suppose To Be Here, Deborah's vocals are perfect for house. She just needs to work with electronic dance producers from the UK. cool

Signing with Clive Davis if you're a woman is like signing a death certificate for some. lol Sure Dionne and Aretha benefited from Clive prior to the arrival of Ms. Houston but he sure forgot about them once Ms. Houston got popular so any female artist signed after Ms. Houston had to deal with being overlooked. Poor Deborah received the similar fate with her Arista contract that Phyllis Hyman had.

Sad but true. If a female artist doesn't know her place like Whitney Houston, Kelly Clarkson, OR Alicia Keys, her career will potential failed under Clive Davis' watch.

Yeah... and I personally think he shafted Aretha's career. It was revived to some degree but after 1986 it seemed as if he didn't know what to do with Aretha. Aretha kept saying she had no problems with Clive but I'm thinking because she hid a lot of angst in her life that there was some tension between Aretha and Clive and I don't think she was ALL THAT happy to see her goddaughter beat her on the charts.

After hearing about the way Aretha verbally ripped Luther's head off years earlier, I don't think Clive wants to get into an argument with her the same way he once got into an argument with Phyllis. lol Clive tooks the peaceful routine and just let Aretha's contract expired.

Because it's a "link". It should be just "text". Click on the blue underlined link - put your cursor anywhere within it. Then click the broken chain link above, to the left of the underlined A. It'll work after that.

Also, you really only need the video's ID. What is that? It's anything after the "watch?v=" part. In this instance it'd be QsXp3qlTH7I And nothing after. Often times you'll get "&featured=" type stuff. You only need THIS part of the URL. So type it like

[ youtube]QsXp3qlTH7I[/ youtube] (with no spaces of course), and it'll embed per normal...like this:
