R&B has been fucked up for damn near 20 years, all year long, not just in the summertime.

That's not true. You would have to shave a few years off that theory. We did have the Neo-Soul movement in the late '90's-mid '00's. At least, until Beyonce featuring Destiny's Child took over.

As far as hip/hop goes, it lost it's luster when every other song was about f*cking and killing. Yes, there were some serious hits that "gangsta rap" produced, but it's not like listening to Heavy D. Feel good music is nonexistent in today's music.

From '79-'86, summer music was the shit!

YEESSSSSSSSS! I touched on this in my post too. 1984 was easily my best summer too. It had such great memories and music to go with every mood. But don't forget Van Halen, Duran Duran, Madonna, Huey Lewis and the News, you know that "white" music that we got exposed to due to the humble beginnings of the music video. A good song was a good song, it didn't matter the race of the performer. Oh how times have changed.

Most of tracks from the neo-soul genre were just as downtempo as OR slower than late 1990's hip-hop. And to make matters worse, The Funk was no where to be found unless it was sampled by a hip-hop producers.

Remember how back in the day as soon as summer hit... so did the new jams. There hasn't been any good music released this summer at all. It seems like a black hole for music. Unless I've missed something....Please let me know.

Janelle Monae, Erikah Badu, MIA, Rye Rye, The Roots all qualified for the BEST summer for R&B & Hip Hop in years, I mean what are you asking for? Beyonce? Kanye? Billboard and Top 40 radio don't mean shit anymore.

But isn't that true of most music. There is no originality, but that's not saying that the music of the Neo-Soul era wasn't "good."

You're kind of right, but there's good summer and pre-summer releases.

Bone Thugs N Harmony - Uni5: The World's Enemy

Tech N9ne - Lost Scripts Of K.O.D.

Tech N9ne - Gates Mixed Plate

Brotha Lynch Hung - Dinner And A Movie

Krayzie Bone - Lyrical Paraphernalia

And September is kind of late for an album to be considered a summer album, but that's when Kid Cudi's "Man On The Moon 2: The Legend Of Mr. Rager" comes out.

Jaheim's whole new album is dope.... I love it!! biggrin

I'm also loving Unthinkable, There Goes My Baby, Bittersweet and Love All Over Me. Nothing groundbreaking but beautiful soulful voices with decent lyrics to match. Thats all you can ask for because the standards for my generation is already low. sad lol lol

Rick Ross' Super High & Sweet Life along with T.I's Takers have been my hip hop jams. I'm liking Power and REVOFEV too.

Stevie Wonder = EARTH
Prince = WIND
Chaka Khan = FIRE
Sade = WATER

See,I love this song but why did they have to screw it up and put a rapper on it?! That's one thing I dislike about modern-day R&B....the constant merging of the two styles.

Thankfully,our local R&B station plays this song without the Jadakiss cameo.

A lot of the songs listed aren't just r&b or rap, they are good dance records too. For me, a song like "Cmon And Ride It (The Train)" was a great summer jam.

I dropped radio stations that play current music in 1997. I hated it since around 1992 or 1993 but I just had current radio on because there was nothing else. The music I loved during that era was in the gay clubs but the majority of it wasn't played on the radio.

Actually during the era of 1992 until 1997, as far as radio goes, I spent a lot of time switching the station over to white pop radio which was playing several of the black dance/house jams. When I think about, it was a damn shame when you had to flip to white radio to get good black music because the black stations were playing the most slowest and dullest shit with no rhythm I had ever heard in my life that practically never got past midtempo. I mean hell, wasn't it black folks that put rhythm in music to begin with? What the hell happened here? Role reversal or something? lol

Anyway, in 1997, we got our first R&B oldies station (oldies as in 1970s and 1980s as opposed to 1950s oldies stations which were the only ones that existed prior to this station). I took those damn mainstream R&B stations off my dial and never looked back. As for the white stations that had been playing some of the dance/house type music, well, that type of music was becoming more and more "acid" and "trance" sounding (black artists were beginning to abandon the genre so all the funkiness was leaving it) so I dropped the white stations too.

I liked disco for the most part. House music was something that I just couldn't get into...esp. those dumb as hell house remixes. But to each his own..you liked that and I liked neo-soul. Yet, the point remains, there are no song that has qualified as the summer song of '10. I suggest that everyone stop looking for one and revisit the songs in your music collection. Thankfully, I have my oldies but goodies to lean on. wink
