I'm mad that album's promotion stopped when it did. Then again I can understand what Michael was going through. I know he wanted to do his best with the album and for some reason due to label politics wasn't able to so he just said "fuck it".

When it happened and Michael spoke out against Sony, people were giving him the side eye for it, but after he passed away and people like Chris Rooney talked about it, you finally see what he meant. It wasn't just people wanting the catalog, but people who felt that Michael needed to do what they wanted him to do

I remember Toure' saying "Well, it was a garbage album and what label is going to promote a garbage album?"

Record labels do that all the time! lol and it was a Michael Jackson album, they were guaranteed to make some bank from it, but you barely knew the album was out here in the states. You Rock My World barely got any promotion, no physical singles released, Butterflies was a centimeter away from the #1 spot on R&B chart and a release of a CD single would've gotten it there

They released Cry, which was a HORRIBLE single choice overseas and it flopped hard. Michael didn't even bother showing up for the video lol

the promotion was a factor in the fate but the album itself shares some blame. Heartbreaker, 2000 Watts, Cry, The Lost Children, and Threatened needed to be taken off and replaced with Another Day and maybe Beautiful Girl

I don't remember hearing anything about Invincible when it came out. The only thing I remember about the era was the NYC Madison Square Garden concert and You Rock My World. After that, its jus tlike what the heck happened?

At the same time, I also think Invincible did not carry the typical Michael Jackson stamp associated with all the other albums previous to it.

Plus MJ looked plain disinterested.

I knew about the album but it didn't have the same excitement Dangerous and HIStory produced and I was old enough to experience the excitement MJ generated from those releases. You could tell any excitement Invincible had was tampered with anyway by, like I said, label politics.

I was 5 when Dangerous was out and I remember it vividly. Black or White premiering on MTV and Fox (we recorded the Fox premiere), the More Dangerous Than Ever special with the making of Remember The Time, The Oprah interview, Michael's appearance at the Grammys, the My Dinner With Michael special that I missed because I went to a wack ass American Gladiators event (I STILL haven't seen the special sad ) the release of the album with the cardboard stands and the longbox case that CDs used to come in, and the premiere of the Jacksons: An American Dream movie

Mark Ronson remixed Butterflies some months back and played it at a show in NY. Sam Sparro played the full cut on his podcast awhile ago and it's great. I'll try to rip the audio biggrin

9/11 happened. And for a while the idea of frivolous pop music wasn't that important any more. Thus the rush release of Cry which then messed with the way the album should have or would have rolled out.

Not saying it was the reason why it bombed, but more that the whole mood.

And whilst YRMW was a good lead single - it didn't sound like anything new or fresh, the video didn't help it either as it felt like either the video they would have shot for Dangerous or a rehash of Smooth Criminal. Nothing fresh and exciting like Scream was or Black or White was.

yeah I remember HIStory hype too and a lot of people buying it (I got mine late though, it was too expensive for me and I was not settling for buying the cassettes) so it felt weird not having Invincible hype.

This sweet and precious little rarity (from the 1995 J-5 boxset Soulsation!) just came up on my iPod and I fell back in bliss with it. I forgot how great this song really was and I don't know why this was never added on one of their earlier releases from 1970-72 as it wouldn't sound out of place. Could've been a big hit if it was. I think I remember a bit of this played on a segment of their 1971 Going Back to Indiana TV special...Great song! music
