If Sony/Legacy decides to do another greatest hits album (which you know they will), they should do a TRUE singles collection set with the various single edits and remixes that appeared on the original releases along with some unreleased mixes that were planned to be released
Volume One could be 1971-1981 Got To Be There (Stereo Single Version)
Volume Two could be 1982- 1992 The Girl Is Mine

vogue called him a beautiful latino girl on the cover of bad....right. I learned that from the MJ treasures book, which I regret buying. While I don't mind some of the constructive criticism, I found it condescending for the most part. The quiche part, really?

I got it for Christmas and have been considering putting it on Amazon along with Nelson George's book. And I agree, I'm okay with constructive criticism, but when it gets to the point where it's condescending or insulting, or flat out wrong? yeah....off with that
I might trade those in and replace them with the new book coming out "The Man In The Music" "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

As a prince fan i get really offended when people compare MJ to Prince, i mean how can you. MJ was a wiered dancer who couldnt play any instruments or write his own songs. He was puppet and Quincy Jones was his master. I know this isnt an official P site (Thank God for that) but serious Why the fark do we even have an MJ thread????????????????????????. I get the whole freedom of speach thing but do you think MJ sites have a Prince thread?????????
| |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
MJ did write some of his own songs. And they were big time hits. Although MJ did not play an instrument, he had an unconventional way of relaying what he wanted played, and how he envisioned the music to sound - he did this with vocal sounds (some liken it to beat boxing but dont think of Dougie Fresh or Biz Markie).
I think folks have a MJ thread on a Prince fan site because when I was growing up...both men were unstoppable. And there was no one who could touch either of them. They both like canceled each other out in terms of greatness. Although Prince and MJ's styles were very different, neither was more talented than the other (in my book) they were both geniuses in their own right. Till this day...no one is greater than either of them.
In addition, both men shared the same audience. During the 80's....many of MJ's fans were also Prince fans...and visa versa. Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

Lemme help you out
Michael DID write his own songs. Not all of them, but he wrote many of them. He was not Quincy's puppet. He was Quincy's protege. Quincy saw a kid who had extraordinary talent but was holding back (which he was) and helped him bring it out, which is what a producer should do. Are there Prince threads on MJ sites? YES and many infact. The Mj forums I frequent have Prince fans and Prince threads in the non MJ sections and are pretty positive
Here's a brief list of songs Michael wrote or cowrote

Let me say this, in the music industry, it's not always about being a one man band. People have different talents. There's people who can write great songs but can't sing. There's people who play instruments but can't sing or write songs, and there's people who can sing but can't write or play instruments. Some of the best music has always been the result of a collaborative effort. It's always been about that. Everybody has different talents and skills "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Great collection Bboy. I have always hoped that Sony/Legacy would do a singles collection box set of MJ with each individual single from his Sony solo careers released on CD singles as originally released either as 7" or 12" versions as they were initially released. "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love"

Yeah, he wrote more for them, there's some songs he wrote with Lionel Richie for LaToya that have yet to be released
Apparently, he also did some stuff with Rod Temperton (who wrote Rock With You, Thriller, Lady In My Life) before he passed. Not sure how true that is, but since they've been finding more and more songs he recorded in the past 9 years almost every day, it's possible "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

I would love for Motown to do it also. They would mix some of the single versions differently. The single mix of Who's Loving You, Mama's Pearl, Take Me Back, and Maybe Tomorrow are a couple of examples "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

Like you said there should be no comparison. Not because they weren't on each other's level, but rather a comparison is something subjective and already tainted by your own bias. Also doing so robs you of enjoying the great music that both artists produced.
You state MJ couldn't play any instruments, but this is factually in correct. He could play a few instruments - piano, guitar and drums. Sure it's not on the Prince multi-instrumentalist level but then again that is a weak comparison.
You claim Quincy was his master - then how do you explain the "master" not wanting to include Billie Jean on Thriller because he didn't like the bassline? And how do you explain Michael's continued success post Bad?
And why do we need an MJ thread? Well because this is under the music-nonprince section, and many fans like myself enjoy discussing all the artists we appreciate. And for the record, yes MJ sites have Prince threads.
As I have often stated, many people bought into the whole "one or the other" argument fostered by the media in the 80s to sell stuff. They always do it with successful artists that hit at the same time. And again, in my opinion, not exposing yourself to the music of both artists really does rob you of some great music.
After all, even Prince has paid tribute to Michael and given him props throughout his career and enjoyed covering his songs (Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, Billie Jean, Shake Your Body Down for example) or pumping up the audience prior to his shows by spinning an MJ track or two.
But thankfully for you, this is just one thread on a whole site dedicated to Prince and music. So if you aren't keen on discussing MJ's music - that's cool, there are hundred of other threads for you to read in peace.
But hey, thanks for stopping by.

Thanks so much for posting this. I´ve never seen it. Here are other rare videos of her talking about Mike and the kids. She speaks of them as his children and says that he is their father and I mean someone dare to say she´s lying. The way she speaks about it all, it´s obvious she truly loves Michael and just wanted to do this for him.
Here she says again, he´s their dad. They are specifically asking her if Klein is the biological father and she just says "he´s dead." http://www.tmz.com/videos/?mediaKey=6fdfb850-9cc6-4193-ad70-6fbce3e9a6ee&isShareURL=true
Here they ask her again and she just says they are looking for fame http://www.tmz.com/videos/?mediaKey=07f34bb0-aafc-4c46-9e1a-b75671bb16b4&isShareURL=true
She has stated many times that he was their father and I will always believe her spoken word over some stupid article. If anyone has a footage of her claiming otherwise, post it.

Agree on a few and disagree on some others.
Girl is Mine - I don't get it either - it's overblown and sappy. I prefer the demo over this, but even then I wouldn't put it on a must listen to list at all.
Torture - I didn't mind it. It's an ok song, but I think the whole Victory album suffers from being an album of solo songs rather than a concerted effort to write like they did back on Destiny or Triumph.
Body - at the time I didn't mind it, but it hasn't travelled well.
Heal The World - when good MJ goes bad and goes Disney. Too syrupy and cringe inducing.
D.S. - like you say I understand the desire to get it out of the system, but its just a basic by the numbers rock song that didn't move his writing style forward at all.
You are not Alone - totally agree. Again overblown production and like you say the only saving grace is Michael's adlibs. But at the same pass I have to throw in Childhood - always felt too showtunesy for me.
Ghosts - for me this is the superior song to Is It Scary. I just prefer the groove and vocal delivery.
Heartbreaker - oh I strongly disagree. I love the chopped up beat, the harsher instrumentation and the sparseness of the vocals. For me one of the better songs on Invincible.
2000 Watts - would have preferred Shout to this - it's just a wasted gimmicky track.
Cry - yes it's poorer man's MITM but I don't mind this, although it starts to meld all the cliche MJ moments in one song.
The Lost Children - I hoped it was the lost song we never heard. Again the production is over blown, pompus and I felt like saying "ok Mike we get it, now move on".
Thanks for sharing your thoughts Bboy. "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love"

Speak for yourself, bboy. I am sure some fans appreciated it. Anyway, I don´t like that song either. I never listen to it. But I like its remix on the Blood on the dancefloor album. It makes it more listenable.
Actually I prefer DS over Scream. I kinda like DS. It´s agressive in the right way, I mean musically. As for the lyrics, Mike probably had to do it for himself. As for Scream, I have just never been crazy about it. It´s trying way too much to be edgy, but it´s not working.
Heaven Knows I Love You, girl - agree, too cheesy. [Edited 7/12/10 4:46am] "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. Being an MJ fan for 30 years you do get to hear the same lame arguments offered up again and again. And I believe everyone should be treated with respect, and if I can help clarify some misconceptions then all good.
Happy for people to step with factual criticisms. "I'm not human I'm a dove, I'm ur conscience. I am love"

I am not crazy about this one either, but I looooooooooooove the demo. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. Like I said to someone earlier....the topic is overkill at this point. I clarified what I meant in an earlier post, and you'll have to scroll for that clarificatioon. As far as Latoya is concerned....believe her if you you are somehow compelled to do so. She's said in that clip that Prince "has it all over as well"...but if we are to believe the images that were released of Prince...he only appears to have it on his armpit. An "armpit" hardly classsifies has having it "all over". Even if he had it under his swimming trunks, that's still not "all over your body". So again...I'm done with this topic because it is moot. None of us can go and examine Prince personally to see what the real deal is. Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

I am not sure what clarification you are talking about, but you still failed to prove to me that some members of his family denied him having vitiligo. Show me a video.
You are just one of those people who keep on talking passionately on something without ever providing some background for their information and when someone else on the other hand tries support their claims during an argument, they first question the source, if that doesn´t work, the pictures by saying they are photoshopped and if that doesn´t work, they come up with some unbelievable version of their own without any kind of proof.
As for the "all over" statement, it may be all over, but the blotches may not be that big to see from such a distance. I´ve noticed he had small blotches on his neck back during the funeral. [img:$uid]http://img689.i.../img:$uid] And don´t try telling me it´s photoshopped as well, cause there are more pictures from that event where you can see them.
This topis is overkilled but I haven´t started it and you were the one most discussing it and this is only my third reply on this subject so don´t blame me for draggin it on.
