What Lauryn Hill Illuminates About The Music Business

What Lauryn Hill Illuminates About The Music Business

  • "Lauryn Hill"
  • What does Lauryn Hill’s career show about the fickle music business? Lauryn has managed to achieve a level of fame that does not require consistent publicity, album production or the “sex factor” that so many female artists rely on to stay in heavy rotation. It was Lauryn’s differentiation from the beginning that set her apart in the minds of music aficionados. And after being out of the scene for so many years, her rare appearance in the media sparks a storm of interest as evinced by her recent appearance on NPR.

Maybe Hill didn’t set out to build such a strong and resonant brand, but it’s clear that she’s one of the few artists who has the power to make news whenever she chooses to step on the scene. So what is Hill’s brand about? Strength, sass, femininity and originality.

Even today, there are not many female artists who can copycat the original L. Boogie, which says alot about the music industry. Is it easier to wear skimpy clothes and gyrate your way to fame? Certainly. To be someone who doesn’t have to compete in the same game governing pop culture competitiveness takes a lot of talent and a high level of artistry.

Other successful brand makers include Maxwell and Eminem. Both have very distinct and strong identities, standing out amongst the sea of copycats. And both have the ability to come in and out of the limelight, easily embraced by a loyal mass following. Identity, whether in business or personal, always plays a critical role

Does anyone really still pay attention to Lauryn Hill? I thought she was pretty much written off as a recluse who will never pull herself together enough to make another decent album?

Not sure about the recluse part because I don't know if she's living in the United States or in Jamaica (paparatzi aint all that active in Jamaica). But I do not think that Lauryn is going to be able to pull herself together enough to come back strongly. Not sure if those mental health and spiritual issues have been addressed or will ever be for that matter.

I read an interview with Pras (the other Fugee member) and he talked about what was going on with Lauryn at the time. It was not only very sad but very scarey. Was like when she broke up with Wycleft, she just spun apart - never to be fixed again. Even in the appearances that she still occasionally makes; Lauryn looks disconnected in my opinion.

Perhaps this business is just too much for her, and she should just continue trying to find herself agian (if she has not aleady done so). "F" the music business if it's going to cause you...to lose you.

Although I'm your biggest fan...I'm also your biggest critic. Can you deal with that?

That article is rather "thin" and tells us basically....well nothing that we couldn't figure out on our own.

Sade had multiple solid albums under her belt before she took her "vacation"(s). lol Miseducation is a CLASSIC album, I can still put it on and not skip a track. So I'll always respect Miss Hill for that one. But that Mtv unplugged mess... ugh! And the MULTIPLE accounts of her mental state not being all that solid (for quite a while). And her apparent conversion to some sort of spiritualism that didn't resonate with her people. Well... I don't know. I hope she can do it. I hope she comes back strong. I just don't have a lot of faith in it actually happening. The shows she's doing on Rock The Bells this year will be a major test in regards to... like... will she actually show up, play on time, say shit that makes sense, etc. lol

Well said Reel.

If music business hasn't worked for her, music is anywhere she is. Hell, she can pick up her guitar, sing, and write songs for herself, family, and friends.

For all the jokes and cracks about her mental state it appears Ms. Hill has gone through what many folks go through, growing up. Young adulthood is a process and unfortunately those tuff times - when you are trying to figure it all out and grow comfortable in your own skin - takes time; Ms. Hill has had to do this with the media and fans looking on and speculating. I wish her well in whatever choices she seeks to go about making music.
