Glastonbury...opinions outside the UK?

Here in the UK Glasto is considered to be the festival of festivals....but how is it perceived in the States and the rest of Europe, is it thought of as being that prestidgious?

Is there an Glastonbury equivalent in the States??

seasick steve is good. he rescued the guitar from a junkyard and it's only got 3 strings. his first tour was him on his own, but he had a band for his second tour. he's got a bit of a cult following after appearing on jools holland

just the fact that these things are a focus and shown on tv etc...shows how far ahead of the USA the UK is in its caring for music

Without prince forums like this I probably would never have heard about that festival. Here in germany the biggest festival is Rock am Ring. And it's fantastic.

That's probably because the BBC have a certain quota to provide for arts and culture etc.

That's a bit harsh in fact it's not true, yes they do get things wrong but the BBC has great programming the best in the world by far.

you obviously don't pay attention to all the great american shows on hbo and abc like lost, 24, mad men, true blood, etc. those guys put real money into writers, actors, directers etc. uk drama is pitiful by comparison, which is why we get all the reality shite. take glastonbury as an example, the bbc are just filming and broadcasting someone elses event, just like the sport

That's more to do with scale the US market is larger, they produce just as much crap as us. When you think of the US think of ITV on a larger scale, 95% rubbish 5% top quality stuff. cool

itv is 99.999% crap. HBO is about 80% great stuff. they invest proper money for shows in the states, we don't, and it shows

There are a few multiple day festivles here....Lollapalooza, (Soundgarden's reuniting and doing it this year. yesss! ), Bonnaroo, but Coachella is probably the closest thing to Glastonbury. I don't think any of the current festivals here compare to Glastonbury as far as longevity. I'd love to go to the Glastonbury festival someday. Considering it's age, I see it as the mother of all festivals.

I heart True Blood.....but it's currently the only show on HBO that I enjoy. The bulk of our programming isn't too great either now. lol Now we have a bunch of reality shows involving spoiled rich people and people trying desperately too hard to get famous. I don't mind diversifying programming, but it's overkill.

I just got back. Fantastic weekend. Glastonbury rules because its so much more than a simple music festival.

But speaking of the music, the highlights for me were.....

Muse........ they totally delivered.

Plan B..... surprising good.

Stornaway.....great debuts.

Radiohead....nice surprise, and worth it for the version of Karma Police alone.

Marina & the Diamonds....girl is going places.

Pulled apart by horses......great newcomers.

Biffy Clyro.....Party time.

Seasick Steve....always delivers.

Stevie Wonder....spot on too.
