Katy Perry's "California Gurls": Anybody else hear a little Prince in this? The music in the verses, mostly.
For some reason, "Glamorous Life" comes to mind, for me.

You don't think the syncopation, synth and melody in the verses is very '80s-Prince?

I think there are prince-like elements there. The slap bass, with drum machine and rhythm guitar (dirty mind era). I wish the vocals were different.... I find the "aaaooooaaaooo" soooo annoying. [Edited 7/4/10 8:57am]

A lot of those sounds are just 80's music sounds. The scratchy guitar, etc. Syncopation surely wasn't trademarked in Prince's sound for all artists. Remember, Prince dug a lot of his cleverness from folks like Sly and James, et al. But do I think of Prince music when I hear Katy's song? Nah, not at all.

Im thinking alot of other things when i hear this song by Katy Perry.
1) why am i still listening to this song 2) Katy has got a huge chest and great body' 3) it sounds like a song that Aqua would have done 4) i cant believe dates that annoying unfunny guy Russell Brand 5) damn Katy has a great body 6) this song is catchy and annoying at the same time but im still listening
so Prince usually doesnt even pop into my head, unless im thinking
oh man if he does anything this annoying on 20Ten im killing myself "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Gotta agree with 2, 4 & 5. Still haven't heard this song from beginning to end. But since i'm not a fan of California, i'm already predisposed to hating it... • Did you first think Prince was gay? •
Wendy: He’s a girl, for sure, but he’s not gay. He looked at me like a gay woman would look at another woman. Lisa: Totally. He’s like a fancy lesbian.

No Prince in it 4 me, but I do hear an almost identical chorus 2 Ke$ha's "Tik Tok". Listen to me on The House of Pop Culture podcast on itunes http://itunes.apple.com/u...d438631917

some im should add way before thinking of prince
7) katy reminds me of Julie Brown (not the mtv one) 8) I would sleep with Katy in a heartbeat talent or no talent (this would be probably top of the list) "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

i remember reading somewhere (probably here ) that prince was an influence on this track, but i tend to think everyone copies p anyways . i like it though... it's a cute little summer jam . always had a thing for katy perry . it's my mom's favorite song right now . "uh-oh, uh-oh, uh, uh, uh-oh..." For all time I am with you, you are with me.

Okay, I figured it out: it's not just the rhythmic structure of the verses that's Prince-like - it borrows part of it's melody from "Glamorous Life".

Sonically, it reminds me of Stars Come Out by Calvin Harris.

I LOVE Calvin Harris! I also dig Cut//Copy. Folks that like old school Prince would love those two acts.

I hear more of a "17 Days" rip-off.
Dig the vocal melody on "sand in out stilettos", and compare it to "didn't answer your phone".

Katy did confirm the Prince reference.
"It's so great that "Empire State of Mind" is huge and that everyone has the New York song, but what the fuck? What about LA? What about California? It's been a minute since we had a California song and especially from a girl's perspective. We took the references of Prince, which is always a great reference, and some of the '90s, almost house music references."

Both songs were produced by that Dr. Luke guy and his productions are beginning to sound too similar to one another...
