thats tough because alot of the artists i like, have strong beliefs and egos, like Bono, Sting,Elton, John Mellecamp, Ryan Adams, but honestly that attitude is strongly backed up by what they do. There are artists that i would like to get into or at least but cant because their attitudes turn me off big time, so its a tough call

Prince.

Its BEYOND me how to this day nobody told him to cut the pretentious shit. I could never tolerate hearing another "free the music" sermon from him again, esp when he doesn't put his money where his mouth is.

nod

As I'm growing up, I've become more and more aware of that, among other things. It's diminished the way I used to be fascinated about his appearance too, since now most of the time I don't like who he seems to be inside his mind. disbelief I'll still listen to his music though.

Miles Davis

Truth be told Davis was born an asshole and he died an asshole. Period. I don't listen to him as much as I did when I was a teenager, young adult.

In his defence though, Miles came from a completely different time. Back then, black men were treated as children at best and imbeciles at worst, so his stubborn arrogance comes as no surprise.

The only thing that wrecks my enjoyment of his music(and many other legends such as Sly, Jimi, Marvin, Al Green, James, Lennon, etc) was his mistreatment of women.

I was shocked at what he said about Cicely Tyson in some documentary, and I don't remember her ever commenting about her life as Mrs.Miles Davis.

He's not getting a pass, Miles Davis and my later father are the same age. Davis was low down, he was an equal opportunity asshole audience, bandmates, family, friends, and children. In his bio he spoke of hitting Ms. Tyson, he laid his hands on everyone he had a relationship with. . . with exception of the last lady he was with. His explanation for why he turned his back to the auidence is some revisionist history.

I think it's a case of genius doesn't always make 4 the most beautiful people. We listen 2 these cats and love them but when you ask them about that "love" they'll look at you crazy. They think if these people could walk in these tight ass boots with all these cameras and all these people I don't know talkin bout they love me for a day they might be a little schizophrenic/psycho/ too.

I hear you.

His whole mess with his children was very sad too, I think his daughter was the only one of his offspring who kept in touch with him till his death.

I don't remember much about his take on playing his horn with his back to the audience, I do remember Chaka saying in a radio interview that he was emphasizing the listening experience and ignore everything else.

Just don't let Stanley Crouch get started on Miles though lol

Don't remember the exact quote, but he clearly indicated that had she kept her "smart mouth" shut, he wouldn't rough her up. Now what she said, I don't know.

Christina -- I love most of the tracks from her self-titled debut & Stripped album respectedly. But her smartass mouth that gets her into trouble with other celebrities even turn me the hell off.

Diana Ross -- She is one of the reasons why the word "diva" has the same meaning as "bitch". Yes, she is a legend, Motown & post-Motown. But her outta of control ego from back in the days was a total disgrace. And lest not forget that she is THE queen of F***ing For Tracks due to way she was able to get Berry Gordy to make up excuses for her since day 1.

Timbaland -- He is one of my all-time favorite hip-hop producers/beatmakers. But his attitude in recent years (from turning his back on Ginuwane to sampling music from a video game WITHOUT acknowledging the truth in the songwriting credit of that Nelly Furtudo song) is totally disappointing.

I'll post more if I can think of other artists with lousy attitudes.

Rachelle Ferrell.

She complains all the time on stage. The piano bench is too low, the monitors are too loud and so one. Once she stopped in the middle of a song and told this guy in front to put out his cigarette because it was messing with her voice.....DAMN! I saw her twice, but never again.

Yep!

She stuck by him also before his comeback years in the 80s when his career was in the dump(before they got married I believe). Cicely was a ROCK.

The only time I've seen her was when she was promoting her album Can I Be Me? and she went to this semi-tirade about sistas who degrade their bodies with superficial products or in revealing outfits(particularly Toni Braxton who made some noise because of her Grammy outfit),,,,,it was a snoozefest untill she started to SING drool thats when I shrugged it off and enjoyed the performance.

Davis did an interview with 60 mintues about 4 years before his death. He spoke then of his dislike of his children. . . though, he didn't single out his sons. He just made a point blank statement and I was shocked. When they reran the interview they edited that part out, I'm glad they did.

I don't care about musicians politcal views if the are the polar oppsite of mine. I would like to think I have empathy with all the bullshit they have to put up with, how easy it is to get caught up in the adulation, praise, and folks all but sucking your dick. Hell, I can see how you could lose you way and everyone has feet of clay. Some people are very brilliant at what they do but they aren't good people. Some use fame and "genuis" as an excuse or a cover to be jerks.

Ken Burns lurking

Oh lord, where's Neal/theAudience when you need him? lol He rarely loses his cool untill this subject comes up. And rightfully so.

Thats one of my fave documentaries, but even I should admit that it was a TOTAL slap to the face of the fusion artists who made some classic statements in the 70s.
