How many of you use that site to catalogue, rate and review your music? I think it's pretty grand, although the forums leave a lot to be desired. lol

My username there is also Moonbeam. Feel free to add me!

It really is excellent! I've gotten some great recommendations from it and have learned a lot.

I have an account, but I haven't really used it in years. Maybe I'll start up again.

Same here - I've been an absentee landlord on my account since about '06. Once in a while I'll go in and update it for a few things that have wound up up on my listening post, but I've given up on trying to make it a record of my collection....and I just don't have the drive to write reviews. I do like reviewing the year & decade lists there, though - I always stumble upon something I'd really like to hear when I go roaming through the outer limits of those lists.

I have an account, but I don't use it much any more. At the moment, I'm only using it to keep a running list of new releases I intend delve into at some point this year. I've been really bad and I think the only one I've actually listened to on my list of about 20 is Sade. There are even releases by a few all-time favorites that I haven't gotten to because I've been on hardcore Bowie/Prince/Howard Stern kicks all year. But for some reason, I still log in there to make a note of current/upcoming releases that I need to keep track of.

PS I can never wrap my head around the amount of love that death metal (and the like) gets on there in the ratings and the year-end rankings. It's baffling to me.

Why? Death metal is such a fringe genre that I'd expect it to have a relatively small group of rabid fans. Wouldn't that naturally skew its ratings higher?

I suppose that makes sense if that's the only fringe genre with a rabid fanbase that's participating heavily in the site. Or if that site is one of only a handful of places where those people congregate online so it skews things.....

Moonbeam's the statistitian (stats class was a long time ago for me) but I'd imagine the site should have some method of controlling for a small group of like-minded listeners skewing results. I believe IMDB employs something like that for their rankings.

Not only is metal rated quite highly, but it's rated quite often. I think it may be attributable to the site having lots of 14-18 year old males. What I find just as disturbing is the excessive love of all things prog over there.

I've noticed that too.

I like reading the reviews but find that the forums focus too much on esoteric genres for my liking.

Indeed. Every year or so, I break down and check out the forums and post, and I always regret it.
