I think when Diana convinced Sidney Lumet to let her do it despite Berry's advice for her not to do it (because Diana was battling Berry for control of her career at the time), Berry did whatever he did to destroy whatever momentum he thought he had so he didn't help to promote it. I think the soundtrack was released on MCA and not Motown. Stephanie left Motown after that.

It upsets me that Stephanie got caught up between those two and took the fall. What a ROTTON scene!

And extremely idiotic, it turned out to be an embarrassment for ALL the parties invloved. I bet she was glad she wasn't part of it.

I agree. It was like that big nasty feud and that blew up whatever opportunity Stephanie could've had to make the film a hit but I'm also glad Stephanie didn't get caught up in it. Winning the Grammy for "Never Knew Love Like This Before" about three years later was PAYBACK because Ms. Ross was nominated for "Upside Down". hah!

If it ain't something, its the other though,,,somebody stays stealing that girl's thunder for some reason. Remember when Roberta Flack made this big commotion about her & Donny Hathaway losing the Grammy to Stephanie? disbelief I love how Stephanie stayed graceful through out all of that mess. Lord knows nobody could blame her had she went off BIG APPLE TIME on both of Diana and Roberta.

Sidney Lumet was not Lena's ex. He is the ex of Lena's daughter, Gail and the father of Lena's granddaughter, Jenny Lumet, who wrote the screenplay for Rachel Gets Married.

That said, what is the story about Roberta bitching about losing the grammy to Stephanie? When did this happen?

lol 'The Wiz' was a fiasco.Diana should have never gotten that role, but the movie has other problems too.

I know Diane's deep throat is legendary but it wasn't the case. It was Berry Gordy's plan to revive the Motown legacy, plain & simple. At this point, they were estranged, right?

The director was Lena Horne's ex-husband, Sidney Lumet eek this is the SAME mofo who made the ever-so-brilliant Network and Dog Day Afternoon among a long, long, looooong list of great films. How in the deep black & blue hell did the man get linked to this calamity? I bet her wall whenever he remembers doing it.

When Stephanie was still signed to Motown, Berry tried to buy movie rights then because he wanted Stephanie and Michael in it. I think the soundtrack was released on MCA and not Motown. Stephanie left Motown after that.

I don't think Berry wanted Michael in the role at first, it was Diana who thought Michael should do the movie. Remember, Berry was suing him and the brothers around that time for breach of contract

Damn, Stephanie was on Motown? Wow, you learn something new everyday eek

Lumet probably did say "the fuck did I sign on for" after the movie flopped. I still love it though lol

Home was written for her voice, the way it should be. It was so nice that she did it twice, the original the first time and a late 80's remake the second time.

With that said, Stephanie sang that song all the way down from her pussy,,,,,ain't NO way in stone cold hell somebody is gonna match that.

Thats like saying, Jennifer Holliday's version of "I'm Telling You" is up for discussion in comparision to the other renditions.

I stand by my statement that The Wiz is an underrated classic. Like Beloved, it hits a nerve and shared the black experience in a way that is uncomfortable to the masses. Interesting enough, both films were directed by white men (Jonathan Demme in the case of Beloved). IMHO, If not for Spike Lee and Kasi Lemmons, our stories would never have hit the big screen as truthfully. Come on, ya-all, think of the holiday supper, don't tell me that isn't the truest form of black family ever put to film. Judge The Wiz on it's one merits, and IMHO it's a masterpiece.

She yawned and yawned about Donny/Roberta's grammy loss to Stephanie, it was right after he passsed away, and she thought the Grammy would grand him a trophy.

She basically said in more ways than one that Stephanie didn't deserve to win.

You still have David Nathan's Soulful Divas, right? nod Its in Roberta's chapter.
